  • Suspension Upgrade Grande

    Hi,

First time posting as I'm a new member.

I have a 2005 V6 Grande, currently stock with Duel Battery set up as I have been camping a few times, to run the fridge, also installed reverse cam as well.

It's time to start on mods. First things I would like to complete would be Suspension upgrade (2" Lift) and new tyres. I thought if would be best to start here to be able to take the weight of the bull bar I would eventually install ect.

Iv done a ton of research, read a lot of posts with the Grande upgrades.

I have looked into the Tough Dog Set up for $1900 delivered (need to find someone to install) Tough Dog Shocks x 4, Tough Dog Springs and Extender Air bags Dunlop.
Question: Anyone had this installed? Is it reliable?

The other is through Air Bag Man, which I like the sound of (2" Lift)

4 x Billstein Long Shocks, Kings or Dob Springs and Dunlop extended Bags. $2500 - $2700 installed.
    Question: Reliable? Any feed back?

Will these upgrades take the boat type rock out of the back of the Prado?

Any other options worth looking into?

Any feed back would be appreciated.

    Cheers

I have the same car same year.
I changed to the tough dog adjustables with the larger airbag man bags.
I can tell you i hate it.Ruff as guts in the dirt. You can feel every bump out there.
You can adjust the shocks all the way from hardest to softest and you cant tell the difference.
Had it back in the shop a few times and each blame the other for the problem.
I would go with the dobinson bilstein set up that most do on here.
But i also here OME are ok as well

Ah sorry to hear about your troubles and thanks for the advice.

I was swaying to the Dob and Bil set up anyways.

      Cheers

Had tough I mean rough dogs once. Never again. Worst ride ever.

I'd be wary of dobinsons too after one of the members had a brand new set of MRR destroy themselves recently within 5000 kms.
Have you looked at whiteys iron man group buy?

I would fit the suspension last. Otherwise, fit adjustable height front struts so that you can increase the preload when you do add the bullbar.

@ Piggy - no I haven't. Do you have a link for me?

@AMTS - would a the extra weigh on the TEMS with a bull bar be sustainable? It might be a while before I'm able to save to finish both a lift and bull bar.
That's why I would assume doing lift first would be more beneficial.
I have a trip to Fraser Island in December so not sure if I'd have both a bull bar and suspension upgrade competed by then.
            Cheers

It was our Dobinsons that failed on an outback trip. Specifically the front left lost all pressure and the front wheel was bouncing all over the place. So we had to replace the front shocks in Alice Springs. No support from our local Dobinsons dealer, and apparently no stock in Alice. Knowing that Whitey was onto Ironmen, I checked around town and found a dealer who had Ironman FoamCell Pro shocks in stock for the Prado, and they altered their busy work schedule to fit them in the next day. In stock standard they were at least as good, but I think they were already better than the MRR's.

Once we arrived back home, I removed the Ironmen from the front and sent them up to Whitey, Whitey revalved them and supplied the revalved rears and new front springs to match. All done.

I have to take the MRR's into Dobinsons in Adelaide to get them checked and repaired, then I will put them up for sale.

Cheers for the advice, I think I'm going to rethink and research into the upgrade, after a few air bags popping and look into coil conversion as well.

Just wondering about your airbag blowouts. Were these with Toyota or other bags, and how old were they? We just got a used Grande with Airmanbag and were wondering about their reliability.

AMTS is the man to speak to about that.
If I find his thread, I will give you the link.

I believe it was factory bags, don't quote me though.

The Toyota airbags' rubber will deteriorate over age and a tear start to form. Usually about 10 years, they will start to leak. Airbag blowouts usually occur at full articulation and the tear becomes closer to exposure. Airbagman have their failures as well.

                          Hi,
Being a grande it will probably have the "adjustable" suspension and you will have to replace front springs and shocks and rear shocks. you can leave the airbags in the back and adjust the height sensor on the upper trailing arms to get the extra height. I would use pedders springs and shocks they do a "comfort" valved front shock which I have in mine. if you want to change the air bag you can but there is some more work involved. I know pedders can be expensive but their warranty and the quality is beats all the rest.
                          I hope this helps.
                          Chris

                            Pedders? Lol.

I'd like most others steer well clear of their stuff.
Cheapest rubbish out there and in no way performs like the other shocks avail..

Pedders..... had a mate that worked for them here in WA.... told me they were re-badged and re-coloured Monroes.
He said yo might as well buy Monroes....they're cheaper!!!
