  • 2.8 Prado Turbo Failure?

    Hi guys,

my 2.8l is fooked. "something" has impacted the impeller of the turbo, 1 fin bent, no compression fins are marked.

toyota say NO WARRANTY as something impacted the impeller ........ anyone seen anything like this before?

and because i choose to you a private mechanic over the dealership, my loyalty to toyota gets questioned and good will is out of the question.

there is 0 evidence as to what impacted the impeller...... where would you think one would stand with such a problem?

    cheers

Your stuck between a rock and a hard place. (Ill play devil's advocate)
Because you used private mechanic you would need to prove they did not cause damage.
But just out of curiosity how many k, who has looked after it, what previous work or repairs has been done ie snorkel cause it may have been someone else fault.
There has been reports of the turbo beening the weakest point on the 2.8's if a incorrect tune or similar has been done.

      its got 30,000km on it.

no snorkel, essentially factory standard apart from dual battery system.

it has been log book serviced. nothing repaired out of standard servicing.

i understand i have to prove my mechanic didn't cause the issue, though there is no evidence available to prove either way......

Oh that sucks sorry to here you getting the Toyota run around.
I have 40k and no issue touch wood with turbo, but it does sound like something has came loose or left in the intake.
Has anything been done to the engine breather side as this feeds straight to turbo

Is the damage on the gas side because you say no compression fins are damaged? If so then that something has come from the engine. That would be another big concern. If it is the air side then open up the inlet system and look. either way what caused the damage will be either in the exhaust or the intercooler.

Perhaps Toyota need to be reminded about Australian consumer law and the role of the ACCC. In simple terms a good must be of saleable quality and fit for purpose. This extends way beyond statutory warranties. The ACCC was on record this week as specifically targeting the car industry trying to enforce use of dealers only for service [they can't]. Forget the monkey and go for the organ grinder. Contact the ACCC and your state consumer protection people.

You don't have to prove anything- they have to have proof that you did something wrong which caused the problem for them not to pay up. Who is to say it is not a failure of one of their parts. Get expert advice. The car is under warranty whatever they say. Good luck. Don't give in to them.

The goods have been damaged. Insurance claim not warranty.

have you seen the damage for yourself or can you post a pic? I took a look at the turbo diagrams here - http://toyota-club.net/files/faq/15-...engine_eng.htm and i think i something found its way into the turbo exhaust side it would leave a lot of damage behind , and not just one fin.

                  More to this story.
Things don't just touch the turbo impellers. And to bend just one means it is more than likely when someone has been working around it. Otherwise how has it been bent?
More follow up is needed to ascertain how this has occurred.
Go to a motoring organisation in your state. RAA. RACQ etc. they have inspectors that can offer more advice and help with either Toyota or your independent mechanic as he may be at fault.

ok, the damage is in the clean air input side of the turbo.
there is no damage on the exhaust side of the turbo.

nothing has been done to the air input side of the car, apart from a replacement air cleaner.

you say insurance claim? as in, through my car insurance company? do they cover things like that? would like to know more info about this .......

the way toyota spoke to me was inapprorpiate in the way that he said "youre not loyal to toyota, we can see that by the lack of servicing done at your toyota dealership..... that made me feel like, because i made a choice to use a qualified, log book servicing mechanic, they want to void their warranty and customer service.

Its a well hidden secret with insurance companies that you can claim vehicle component failures. I believe pretty much all insurers will cover these kind of failures. I would be pushing to go to another dealer and explaining the situation. Sounds like a dodgy dealer who doesn't care. Ring Toyota Australia and explain the situation and see what they can do. What you need to remember is most dealerships are franchised and only operate under the Toyota banner.

                      Goodluck.

Post up some photos. Have you checked the intercooler?

As Piggy said damage to one vane only is very odd. Is it impeller damage or inlet vane damage?

                            Cuda,

My local dealership seems to be doing everything to help me, its toyota australia that have thrown their hands in the air and said NO WARRANTY as it was "struck" by something....... with no evidence of what it was, its still MY fault ..... like seriously?

and yes, they have cleaned the intercooler out, no evidence of any solid matter anywhere in the system.

That is very odd to bend a fin. Normally if it is something that's been sucked in it destroys the fins.
What is bearing end float like, something is very odd to just bend like that
