this is my argument, the end float is there, but nothing super huge. but there is no marks on the compressor cover to show it has been struck by the fin....... im at a loss as to what has caused this, and be left with a huge bill to cover the repairs for an unindentified issue is a pain in the ass.

and noone will give me a "well, if we do this this and this, we will still cover the engine for warranty" they all just throw their hands in the air and say "i dunno"......

What were the symptoms before the mechanic opened it up? I cannot see how that damage was caused by a foreign object being infested into the engine.

Why did the mechanic pull the inlet apart? Give us the whole story.

There is no way that the engine was running when that damage occurred to the compressor wheel.

        IMO

would the turbo still work ok with one fin bent ? if that fin was not scraping on the compressor housing?

Even if there was no contact it would self destruct pretty quickly.

there is more to this,,,, why would you not get it serviced at Toyota, first 6 services are capped price. buy a 70k prado then skimp on servicing, that turbo was not going when the fin bent, no way..

What ever caused a dint would have caused subtaintially more damage if it was rolling at running speed.

As for not going to Toyota for servicing??? Why would nt you go els where ? Most dealerships are average at best, Little knowledge of there own vehicles with average workmanship to boot. Capped servicing is the biggest of all scams capped means your car is looses out, they won't run at a lose so do the math

Agree with the others - no way the turbo was spinning when it was damaged.

Do you KNOW that it was damaged post production? Could there not have been a mircoscopic manufacturing fault that caused the vane to delaminate/bend?
                        Cheers

Also have the point that as its such a low KM car, whats to say the damage wasn't done during manufacture and missed by the guys that fitted it in the factory.
They are obviously pushed along and may not have noticed it.

Either way, it wasn't spinning when it happened. So its either a tool has hit it and bent it, and if not that then during manufacture or original fitment is the likely culprit.

Would your mechanic do an affadavit/ Stat dec to toyota stating he has never worked around the turbo (If he didn't).

Id be talking to your local consumer affairs/motoring organisation. The fact you have had another mechanic (Non Toyota) work on it may have voided your warranty however. Whats it say in the fine print t&C?

Some good points here. I agree that was not caused by an impact. The blades are rotating at enormous speeds and there would be damage to the other blades in that case. Excessive end float from a bearing failure would be the same as the blades would have touched the housing and you would see damage on the housing and all the blades. "Delamination" looks to be the most likely but I can't zoom in on the picture to have a good look. As previously asked, what was the original symptom that lead to this?
