ok, let work, everything fine, drove 7km or so, stopped the car, put kids in from daycare, started the car, drive out of the driveway, and up a hill, at 3k rpm i heard an immense whistle develop, limped the car home.

took it to the dealer the next morning, they drove it, stalled it up in the workshop, and agreed it sounded like it was coming from the turbo area.

left it with them, that afternoon get a call to come and inspect what they found. they found the fin bent after looking in after taking off the intake pipe.

turbo got removed for closer inspection.

it has done 2000 odd km since the last service.

NO work has been done around the turbo, air cleaner as log book servicing says.

there is NO damage to the compressor cover. it has not had any scraping of the impeller on the housing.

there is no evidence anywhere of any foreign matter unless its wedges deep in the intercooler, but there is nothing that was discovered when they backflushed the intercooler, nothing in the air system at all anywhere. there is nothing showing in the dpf.

the service manager did try to straighten the fin with a pair of pliers to see if it was a weak area of steel....... smart thing to do when its not been covered by warranty and they just wanted to see how hard the steel was if you ask me (NOT!).

on the choice of mechanic thing: im not skimping, im putting good quality oil, genuine parts, etc. i am using a private mechanic as i can use the same mechanic for many years, not have a different mechanic work on the car every service. not that i doubt the ability of the dealership staff, but this is my choice. even toyota says, as long as their is log book servicing completed, warranty stands. apart from when they dont want to warrant something.

i will be arguing my point fairly firmly with toyota, and i will be requesting a warranty manager or the like to come and have a look. i dont want to throw the local dealership under the wheels, but i will be stating "how can i get this inspected for a cause of damage by a turbo specialist if YOUR trained tech grabs a fin with a pair of pliers"........ thats just poor form. we will see how things pan out once i all toyota again.

So it's either a delaminating turbine or metallurgical fault.
If it's just happened as you say. And your description pretty well matches that.

I'd fight pretty hard on it.
Ask for ( and pay) for an independent turbo specialist to look at it. And see if you can have a metallurgical specialist test the turbine wheel itself for any metal based issues that might get toyotas attention.

Id be contacting your motoring organisation to seek some legal advice etc.

Almost looks like the metal peeled up. To uniform for a "dent"

In a previous life I worked as a quality control inspector. This photo looks like a metallurgical problem to me where the metal has literally come apart. There doesn't appear to be any impact damage but rather the blade has started to disintegrate. Only a metallographic or even X/ray or similar examination would be able to tell.
Trying to convince a stubborn proud company like Toyota may be very difficult.

Was that photo taken after the chap used pliers on the fin?

that pic is of the turbo after they tested the flexibility of the fin with pliers.
i am hesitant in putting up more pics at this stage as i am still in talks with toyota, etc, if you can understand that.

although that fin looks like it is delaminating, you must be made aware that it is just bent over, the flash in the pic has made it look like it is 2 pieces, where is it just 1 fin, and the other piece you see if of the lower fin under this bigger primary fin.

my motoring advisor has asked where the evidence is to what struck the turbo, when i said there is no evidence supplied or found that has been discussed with me or toyota headoffice, he questioned how it could be denied based on no evidence..... to get back on the phone to toyota and step up to a regional manager of warranty/service and get them to personally visit and inspect the parts involved.

so here i am trying to sort this out with toyota........ will keep you all advised as to the future change in condition.
