  • Underbody protection reviews/suggestions

    Hey folks,
Apologies if this has been covered in a thread I can't find or I'm not posting in the best place (very new here!). I'm looking into getting the ASFIR front skid plate but having trouble finding recent/reliable reviews online. Has anyone fitted one to a 90s or have any suggestions for similar products available so I can fit it myself? Thanks

I have a BushSkinz plate, good delivery and fair price.
Only negative is you have to drop the plate to change engine oil/filter. No large access hole but it doesn't worry me as I like to have a look around, water blast etc with the plate off.

ASFIR would probably quite expensive if you can find it here in Aus.

      Other options are;
      - FMC from Macquarie 4x4 (strongest at 4mm, good design)
      - Brown Davis (3mm, good design)
      - Boos bash plates (?mm, lacks middle supports)
      - BushSkinz (?mm, lacks middle supports)

Have a look at ARB. Dunno if they make a 90 Series set but the 120 is well priced since it includes a transfer case plate too. Many don't.
2007 GXL V6 - ARB Bullbar with LED lights, snorkel, extractors, 2 1/4" dual exhaust, K&N filter, dimpled/slotted rotors, headrest dvd players, Ebay Satnav/reverse camera, GME 3100TX, Tigerz11 Side awning on custom brackets with Maxtrax mounts, 300W Invertor, ARB Underbody protection, Lightbar and STZ 265/70 tyres.
Wish list in order I'll get them: Sliders, 2" lift, E-locker, Winch bar with winch.

Did it fit alright first go and does it take much time taking it on and off for services? Thanks

Glen's correct, for some reason they dropped the 2-middle supports, it would mean them welding a spacer tube/end plate and then cutting an access hole for a socket.
It's 4mm thick and I had thought to make those centre supports but after using it, decided she's well strong enough as is for me.
I drilled 2-extra holes at the front mounting since there's 5-threaded holes on the car and most plates only use 3.
I've had that thing off more times than I can remember. On the road I crawl under and drop her on my chest, at home I have a ramp. Off in a minute or two.
The BushSkinz single plate comes further aft than the 2-factory plates.
I made my own gearbox plate that bolted to the end of the Bushskinz but have since chucked it.
I was having overheating problems and EVERYONE who wandered over to have a look said their old KZ's had over heated when fitted with full underbody protection. (This was 90 and 120 series)
One bloke went as far as to remove all the mud skirts between body and chassis as well as raising the rear of the bonnet with blocks, reckoned you had to get that hot air out.
Of course they were all driving 200 series, it seems at some time nearly all grey haired nomads have towed with a KZ and fairly quickly upgraded leaving the KZ for town duties.
