  • 1KZ-TE fuel filter?

    G'day all.
A quick question. I have a 2000 model, 90/60 dual tanks, intercooled turbo diesel.
Is there another fuel filter apart from the one under the bonnet?
    Cheers, Smokey.

There is a filter in the injector pump banjo and I think another under the fuel temp sensor, best to do a Google to see where they are.
No other main filters though, not like the 150.

      Thanks for that Carco.
I've done the one under the bonnet. I expect the injector pump one would have been done on the pump rebuild 40,000kms ago and presumably it's not one to be changed on routine servicing.
Ol' mate suggested maybe another filter under the vehicle between the fuel tanks but I couldn't find one. Maybe not this model.
      Cheers and thanks again, Smokey.

Yes a nice simple system, no pumps or extra filters between tanks.
Apparently the 150 does and that's the one to check.

          Update;
I was replacing filters (air & fuel) hoping to eliminate a rough idle for about 3 seconds after a cold start. It didn't work. Some weeks later I started getting a puff of white smoke on cold starts accompanying the rough idle.
So I took the bus to the local diesel guru, he threw a set of glow plugs in after finding two dead and said see how she goes. He wasn't too keen to do compression tests etc. I suspect he knew what was coming.......
So I loaded up the van and headed off for a long weekend. Almost at our destination, after a short steep climb, the co-pilot said she could smell something, a glance at the temp gauge said it all, two needle thicknesses above normal and I knew we had problems. Unable to stop, I just slowed and she hovered slightly above normal temp until I could pull over. Red coolant everywhere, overflow cap blown off and loss of about a litre of coolant. With 20kms to get to the campsite I risked it. All good, set up camp and had a great weekend. Decided to tow her home and save risking more damage, hoping I had a blown head gasket.
At the gurus workshop there was bad news. Head gasket intact, so a new head was ordered. I had the weekend to decide what else. The ol' girl had done 437,600 kms, the bores were starting to look a little polished so I thought rings & bearings are the go aswell. I knew the original clutch was starting to struggle in the dunes so that was replaced too. Lucky, when the engine & box were separated the spigot bearing fell out in pieces. Injectors were done at the same time.
She's got almost 1500kms on the rebuild and has freed up nicely. Sad to spend so much on the old girl but she's already had new suspension, alternator & starter, timing belt and water & injector pumps in the last 2 years and tyres 2 months ago so there's not much left to do.
Interestingly, with the cracked head she still pulled the van as normal and we wouldn't have noticed a problem except for the smell.
It'll be a nervous next trip with the van on......... wish me well. ;-)

I hope you replaced the radiator and water pump too? I have a suspicion that poor cooling is a factor in many heads going, and the standard temp gauge gives you zero useful info on the real temp. Two-three needles width above half can be anywhere between 75-110C, and ideally an alloy head should be kept below 100C, especially on these force fed diesels.
              cheers
              Steve

                Hi Steve,
radiator flushed & checked when the new water pump & timing belt went in a few months ago and rechecked during the rebuild.
I'm thinking seriously about a separate temp gauge though, one that acccurately shows temperature rather than the lazy factory fitted unit.

Yep, get one. Maybe as part of an engine scanner (I have a Madman EMS) that will give you the essentials: EGT and coolant temp plus oil pressure, voltage. The temp probe is in the upper hose, so it reads the temp exiting the head, which is the critical number.

                      Thanks for the advice guys.
Strangely, the head failed a few weeks after reading all about it here on Pradopoint...... jinxed I was.
Ol' mate up the road has the same vehicle, when I told him about my head he said he replaced his 2 months prior at 380,000kms.
