  • Turbo failure?

I am a newbie to this site. Its a damn good source of information. Thanks to all members!

Bought a 2007 Prado over 12 months ago (Model KDJ120R fitted with 1KD-FTV engine). (Wish I had bought one earlier.)

Its done over 180kms and injectors/intake was recon'd at 150kms. A few weeks ago I noticed the car's lack of torque. It was more obvious when towing the boat (1.2T)

I went through the intake over the weekend and cleaned it all out. It was pretty ugly in there, so I thought this fixed the problem. Now after running the car today, there is little change.

Further diagnosis, the PIM sensor does not change reading (~80kPa) while idle or driving?? Pulling it out and giving it a good blow, will register 104kPa, so assume the sensor is ok. (lines are all clear.)

I can only guess the turbo is not boosting the air pressure. I also assume it is the source of the oil leaking into the intake?

It is also possible the oil is coming from the PCV, but I dont imagine much (unless a BIG problem with compression leakage?)

Has anyone else experienced this problem?

Does anyone know a reliable mechanic in Sydney (near inner west?) that can help confirm/repair or otherwise help diagnose?

My guess is I am up for a turbo replacement AND possibly further investigation for the oil leak source and blocking up the intake manifold/throttle body. A compression check may help. Any other ideas?

These things make a lot of oily residue in all your intake pipework so don't write the turbo off just yet.
Think they run an electric control for the variable vane turbo, not a conventional wastegate with actuator. It may be be stuck or perhaps an electrical fault.
Compression check would be a bit of a mission on these engines.

Agreed, #### checked mine when the injectors were out using some gear made to fit into the injector ports.

have you checked the vacuum hose at the rear of the intercooler if it comes of they loose power

Hi All, having taken the turbo out, found the linkage arm detached from the motor actuator. Circlip was missing, which is odd as they are a tight fit.
This likely explains the lack of boost but still need to check seals and determine the source of oil getting into the intake.
I have sent the turbo away for a service so waiting back to find out what they find.
