Qfm a1rm. I did this as an upgrade from bendix after having really bad brake fade on long doen hill runs. My new pads grab really hard.

Bendix 4x4. Used them heaps, good for towing etc. Only way to make them fade is ride the crappers out of the brakes.

I use Bendix with no complaints and have done so for years. I do use them in conjunction with RDA slotted & dimple rotors though. I've used heavy duty 4wd Ferodo pads once and got the same kilometres out of them as the Bendix.

          Another vote for Bendix here.

When I first installed the Bendix 4wd pads they were pretty good once bedded in however recently when towing or long down hill runs they've faded repeatedly. When I pulled on of the pads out the outer edge crumbled off the backing plate. The inner pads were worn a little more on both left and right calipers, they had around 3mm left. One plus for the Bendix was minimal rotor wear after 70 000km.

There was heaps of bronze coloured pad film on the disc. I'm not sure if this caused the fade. Hopefully the new pads hold up a bit better in the long run.

Sounds like your relying on the brake pedal a bit much and getting things wayyyyy too hot. Do you use the gears to slow the car on said downhills?

When I'm off road I generally use the gear box and brakes together. When I'm towing I use 4th gear but avoid using lower gears due to heat build up in the transmission. I don't have a lock up kit or modified valve body.

You'll find it safer and a lot less severe on your brakes if you drop gears (and speed if needed) on downhills. To be getting brake fade means your over doing it. And will likely find a time that you'll have nothing left.. I always drop gears on downhills if towing a larger load.

The Bendix are a good pad, but if you give them a lot of sudden applications and on downhills towing etc, you will be able to get the pedal feeling heavy as they fade, they recover quickly Ive found however.

QFM 4x4 - a fair bit better braking performance than stock.

QFM a1rm - if you want to clean your teeth with the steering wheel ;-). They also like eating rotors.

On my tow car I found that the cold performance of Bendix pads deteriorated (vs new pads) after about 15-20'000km. It's most noticeable with the extra weight when towing. Once warmed up they are fine though. It's happened with the last 2 sets.

On my daily driver I've gone back to Toyota pads but changed to DBA street series discs (and did a complete brake fluid flush) - the stopping is phenomenal! I've only done about 5000km with this combo so far, and it still surprises me when I stamp on the brake. With braking this good I'm actually not that bothered about getting extra long pad life.

bake fade like you describe must be when towing a > 749 kilo trailer - that would require brakes - have you investigated sorting out the brakes on your trailer to share the load?

if its <750 then SLOOOOOW down

I completely agree with others comments regarding driving style. I have to drive up and down a long steep mountain range 5 days a week. I used to get brake fade myself near the bottom years ago when following under speed traffic a fair way down but that was when I was riding my brakes. I then started using the gears (auto) to help control the speed of the car and feather the brakes here and there and the difference is like chalk and cheese. I've seen many cars towing caravans or loaded trailers down the range with the brakes smoking all the way to the bottom. Use your gears and it will help profoundly.

If you've got standard rotors on I'd change them to slotted & dimpled so they get rid of heat build up much more efficiently. When I was running standard rotors and riding the brakes a lot I was warping rotors frequently.

Yes, always use a combination of engine braking and wheel braking when descending long hills.

Can anyone comment on pads that leave less brake dust on the wheels..? I've always used Bendix pads but find they leave a moderate amount of brake dust.

qfm 4wd. I have them on the back end. They leave a light grey coloured film after a month of driving.

There's heaps of options on ebay but if you want to talk to someone in the know, try brakes direct. They sell a few brands so they should be able to give you unbiased info.
