  • ECB Bullbar owners - a question

I had a ECB big tube bullbar fitted recently to my 2013 facelift GXL Prado.
I am concerned about my cut Prado inner guards and whether they should be fixed to the bashplate (outer guards) or left free.
At present they are not attached and as expected over bumps ,corrigations etc are making a noise hitting the bashplates or body as they are free to move which is not good.

I have been in contact with ECB and as per their instructions the Prado inner mudguards should be bolted to the bullbar bash plates ( or outer guards) with the bolts supplied which would stop them from banging around.
However, I am concerned this may in fact damage the Prado inner mudguards in extreme situations over the long term.

Why? The Prado inner guards are attached to the body while the bash plates through the bullbar are attached to the chassis. If they are both bolted together as per ECB instructions what happens when the body flexes going over corrigations/bumps and it and the chassis go in different directions?- does something have to 'give' which may be the Prado inner guards being ripped from the body or is there enough free play to avoid this?
    What has been your experience?
Could you please tell me if your:-
    1. Prado left and right inner guards are attached to the bullbar bash plate (outer guards) as recommended by ECB by using the 6mm bolts supplied?
    2. Have you had any issues with the Prado inner guard being damaged or pulled away from the chassis due to being attached?
    thanks in anticipation

I have a TJM T13 bar, not an ECB, but I did have similar issues with noise from the guards over bumps. The guards don't attach to the bar at all with the T13, they just overlap a bend in the plate. In my case the guard was left too long and was being pushed by the plate and flexing enough to hit the washer bottle and make a decent knocking sound.

TJM fixed it by trimming a little more off the guards. There's a few cm of space now to allow for movement of the bar and it's much quieter.

I've seen other people on here who have bolted the guards to the bar. I can't see it being an issue - yes, the bar is bolted to the chassis and the guards to the body, but the guards are very flexible, and the movement between the two is pretty minimal (look at your bar moving relative to the bonnet as you drive to get an idea of the travel).

Thanks for your thoughts malloc - appreciate it.
I suspected that it will be Ok if I bolt the inner guards to the bullbar outer guards, but thought it wise to check first with other ECB owners just in case.

        Hi David,

The bash plates on my 2011 have bolts to the plastic inner guards. The ECB was fitted 80,000k ago.
There are two on the drivers side plastic and one on the left side plastic, due to the asymmetrical inner guards.
There no signs of stress in the plastic around the bolts.
We don't do any hardcore off-roading so no persistent body flexing moments are involved.
However, we do use forestry dirt tracks towing the van and we have encountered a few river bank descents and ascents where the
Factory tow bar has gouged out the turf. So some minor body flex there perhaps, but we're not concerned that there'll be enough to cause any damage.

        HTHs,
        Kel

          Hi Kel,
I did go with the inner guards being bolted to the bash plates so it is reassuring that you have not had any issues over a long period of time by fixing them.
The guards were making quite a noise when driving before I bolted them. My 2013 guards have 3 bolts in both the left and the right guards as they are quite flat where they touch the bash plates. They are now firmly fixed with no allowed movement at all.
Thank you for letting me know - most appreciated.
