Hi all,
I’m having issues with my 07 Prado 120 GXL steering wheel controls working intermittently. Around 50% of the time the controls will all work perfectly with all buttons functioning as they are meant to. The remaining 50% of the time the volume up and down buttons will not function or respond at all, the skip track forward button will work correctly and the skip track backwards button will not change the track but actually increases the volume level. There seems to be no pattern as to when the controls work correctly and don’t, some days I will jump in the car and they will work whilst on other days they won’t. I have only owned the car since January and it has always had this issue, I haven’t noticed it to become any more or less frequent in this time. The stereo is an aftermarket Kenwood unit which is a Toyota specific unit and the factory steering wheel control wires plug directly into the back of the stereo (I have checked all the wiring at the rear of the unit but all appears to be fine).
Someone mentioned it may be the clock spring in behind the steering wheel that is faulty or its connections may be corroded. When the buttons are not working I have tried turning the steering wheel whilst pushing the buttons but have not been able to get them to activate through doing this. I also haven’t got any airbag or other warning lights displaying on the dash which I have read are common to faulty clock springs. Im thinking the next step may be to replace the clock spring and hope this fixes the issue.
If anyone has experienced something like this before or has any knowledge on what it could be it would be of great help.
Thanks Leigh.
