  • Foam Cell Pro kit for my 150 GXL?

    Hey There

My stock suspension is not coping with my new steel bull bar, driving lights and dual batteries. (and ARB roofrack)

I don't do crazy off-road stuff, mainly commute, but twice a year I travel remote, camping with my family (with plenty of gear incl. fridge etc)

So, I have been researching and I am thinking of fitting an Ironman Foam Cell Pro kit. (45mm lift, constant load front and performance rear)

I have a quote of $1880 fitted. (I guess this includes an alignment).

    2 questions.

I believe the shocks are super nice but are the ironman springs any good?

Anyone know a reputable suspension place in Melbourne (like Zordos in QLD)?

    cheers

    Juz

Did your research lead you here?

A lot of thought has gone into the valving and then with matched springs for your weight.

I highly rate Hendersons Suspension in Carrum Downs. They have fit at least one of the group-buy Prados, and are a business that are good at what they do (only suspension) and offer old fashioned service.

      Hey drwormy

Yes, I have considered Whiteys group buy with the re-valved shocks. I don't think the re-valving will suit my needs. More for serious off-roaders I believe.

I'll check out Hendersons for sure! Thank you.

I was really concerned about the valving and after taking the plunge I have been amazed. Just finished a 1200km trip with a mate who has a Prado with stock suspension so was able to compare back to back.

Whitey's shocks are actually more compliant, they soak up little bumps and have a smooth feel compared to the stock suspension. The suspension is great around town but it really comes into it's own once loaded up. At speed and over rough terrain the suspension just soaks up bumps and hits that jar and shake the standard suspension. At the same time there is no wallow, the suspension does the job and gets straight back to neutral. If your not paying attention to it you forget it's there which is the measure of suspension doing it's job.

I haven't done heavy corrugations with my camper yet, that will be next month but I'm very optimistic. Best money I have spent on the Prado by far.

As above, the revised valving is better under all circumstances. Brilliant in fact.

Talk to Mark, send him an email.

Its actually better in all respects than stock feeling, unless you like the wallowing drive quality. For me, Marks Prado handles and drives better than my Yaris with just me on the road / commuting (which is relatively firmly sprung due to its low weight and needing to accommodate 5 passengers).

If you put in soft road suspension then you are minimizing BOTH its on road ride and ability offroad.... which, i argue, if you go remote thats where you want it.

Best thing you could do is contact Mark and see if he can hook you up with someone in Melbs with the kit and go for a ride. Im happy to arrange for you to ride in my FJ (it weighs 2.4 T, so similar to a light P150), but i only have the Ironman rears ATM.

Mate, just go for it. Like above, Mark installed mine on my 2003 bus (not truck) and he transformed it. Best money I ever spent on it....although it's been as the assessors for the last week as someone ran into the back of me.

I was really thinking about moving it on as the old set up was awful and crap. However Mark has transformed it into a potential off road beast. Having a chip, a/m exhaust and a boost controller helps. Will keep it now for a long long time yet.. ta

Same question but for Sydney. Can anyone recommend an installer for Whitey's group buy re-valved suspension?

I have just been down the path of fitting the Foam Cell Pro's (finished last night) and new coils. I did have a Koni/King Springs setup and was going to use the old springs but they simply weren't right for the shock valving.

I did the front with a new Dobinsons coils, C59-350 from memory, It's really nice.

I fitted up the rear shocks last week with the Kings Progressive coils that I had, it was terrible, the shock didn't match the spring at all. On advice from Mark, I got a set of Dobinsons C59-325 for the rear and fitted them up last night, It's a lot better but I think the standard rate on the Foam Cells is still a little harsh.

I think I'm going to pull them out and send them up to him and have them re-valved. Based on what I have tried to do and the result, I would recommend taking advantage of the group buy, I wish I did.

I had foam cell pros installed last week with ironman constant springs in the front and performance in the rear. Was a little stiff initially but after 500kms has settled nicely and i love the new feel.

Wow, thanks for the responses guys.
Seems like Mark is doing a great job with the re-valving and matching of springs to suit everyone's rigs.
Just don't want to spend much more than $1800 on new suspension. I have so much more to do on my Prado... tyres, cargo barrier, UHF etc.

Ok, good feedback, thanks Rdae1981. What sort of lift did you achieve? Has it dropped much after 500km? Are you in Vic?
