  • Scratched my bumper - time to get a bullbar?

So last week this massive concrete pillar in my parking garage started moving all of a sudden and smashed into my car

The left edge of my front bumper is scratched up pretty badly (see attached picture below).

I've wanted a bull bar for a while now and this might be the best opportunity to get one. Not that I NEED a bullbar - I live in inner-city Sydney... But it looks cool and also helps with approach angle...

Been driving around the city this morning to get some quotes.

First off, went to a couple of smash repair shops. Both refused to quote immediately and told me I had to get back on Monday after 9am for a quote. Not very practical given I have to work...

Also went to ARB and TJM. Man, bullbar prices have gone up! $3k for a colour coded ARB Deluxe or a TJM Outback... Surprisingly, nobody could tell me if the scratches were low enough so that they will be cut-off entirely with the bull bar install...

I'm hoping the Pradopoint community can help me out with a few questions as the pros were clueless:

    1) Could someone with a Facelift 150 Prado (MY14+) with either an ARB Deluxe or TJM Outback bar possibly measure the distance from the light to the pinch weld of their bull bar for me? The highest scratch is 160mm from the bottom of my light...

    2) Does anyone know approximate pricing to fix this damage in case I don't get a bull bar? Does it need a full bumper replacement or is it salvageable?

    3) What have people recently paid for the bull bars above? I can only find older threads and they seem to suggest prices should be $500 lower at least...

    Thanks all!

    Cheers,

    Dex

ARB Summit Bar should take care of it.

Although not the front, I had a quote done this week for a new rear bumper replacement
$675 new bumper, painted and fitted.
I was hoping for a higher quote so I could swap out for a Kaymar bar
New 2015 150s GX 5 seater with floor mats, towbar and a big wish list
Previously a 2004 120s 1KZ GX silver manual with stuff
before that a 1996 RV6 90S with lots of gear

Bull bar for city driving only? There are some fairly serious safety consequences for other road users and pedestrians from a bull bar.

And 4WDs should have a few scratches if they are getting used properly.

Thanks, that's the price I was hoping for. I might wait until the Sydney 4WD show in October to see if I can score a deal.

Haven't considered this one so far. How is it different from the Deluxe, and how much did you pay?

Haha, my thinking exactly. Where did you get the bumper replaced? Toyota or somewhere else?

              starts at 3k for bar
              then 1k for led's
then 2k for suspension to hold this shite up off the ground :-)

              good luck

Different (more modern) styling. Thicker top tube is 60.3mm (deluxe is 47mm I think). The summit just looks better IMHO.

My summit bar and recovery point cost me $2800 fitted. And yes, your damage will be cut away for the install.

Also, I didn't get the fog lights fitted because they are lame and ARB wanted over $300 extra for them. I'll be getting these puppies when they come in stock.

I don't know about the quality but the AFN replaces the whole bumper http://www.afn4x4.com.au/toyota-prad-150-facelift-2014/
(also useful if you want to keep or sell the whole old bumper)

LOL - I had something worse happen when I first had mine, clipped a construction fence on a job site when I sank in some mud and completely punched in the left side front corner, about the size of a watermelon.

I was convinced it would be a new bumper and re-spray - new bullbar I thought. I went home and removed the splash guard, heated it with hot water and used a long handled shovel to pop it back out.

End result 5 min effort saved be $2500 on a bullbar.

Ironically I got touch parked by a geriatric on the other side about a month later, left a tone of white paint, it scrubbed off. If I had a bullbar it would be all scratched and marked anyway. Nothing gained it would seem.

Save your money. No one can see the marks at all on my car. Well except the roof scratched where my kayak slid off one day in the carpark....
