  • Catch Cans

I have been told that I should fit a catch can to my 2009 D4D 3lt Prado in order to prevent sludge build up in EGR etc.
In my opinion this should have been included with the vehicle but as it isn't I got a quote for the required plastic box
with 3 tubes, filter, bracket, 2 bits of oil proof rubber hose and a few hose clamps and am staggered to find it will set
me back $465 not including fitting.
I do not want to go down the popular road of EGR blanking plates with a little hole in for fear of fault codes down the
track etc. apart from the legality. The diesel experts with columns in the 4WD press and numerous adverts all agree I
should fit one but I fear I am being ripped off at this price. I can buy a winch (much needed) for this money. They all
say a good quality one should be used, but with no mechanical parts and probably the same filter element ($90) WTF.
Can anyone offer any hints please.

I disagree with your opinion on the EGR plate regarding codes etc. Its been around for a long time now with many people clocking many thousands of km's and no issues to be noted. It also has the benefit of reducing the temp of your air intake back to normal instead of what the heat exchanger in the EGR system can achieve which is no better than radiator water temp. ATM it can be argued that the EGR system is counteracting your intercooler to a certain extent.

If you ask some people they will also disagree with the catch can solution. At the end of the day it's your choice of course.

I have seen the other way. Your correct that it is illegal.
That said I know of vehicles with 6-7 & 8 mm holes in EGR blanks that have still thrown codes. Some do. Some don't.
I also remember that some of the posters that now say no to a catch can used to suggest them... 🎱

I've got a catch can, from Berrima Diesel, and yes, it cost about that much but that was fitted. That's on a 2016 GXL 2.8

Interested to hear why someone would recommend not fiting one though...?

After what I have pulled from myn I'd recommend all 2.8 owners. To put one on

There's an argument the oil makes the carbon less abrasive.

Catch cans dont catch all the oil mist , just a fair bit of it , there will always be some oil going back to the intake. On the Provent , you can unscrew the cap with the engine running and see how much oil mist is coming from the rocker cover. put the cap back on , then remove the exit hose and there will still be some mist coming out. compare the difference.

if you want to see excessive oil mist , you should see what European diesels pump out !!

                catch can info

Halloooooooo everibody, i have an 155 2012 vith 160 000 km on the odometer.Absolutely no smoke from exaust, mixed use ( street, sometimes higways vith some heavy accelerations for cleaning Fap and some mountain weekends with others offroad rigs) next week Toy in service for water pump, disteibution and cleaning ogpf egr valve. In Italy you can buy normal diesel or a better one - presume more refined-slighty more expensive.
I wait anxiously to see the ondition of egr valve, then iwould like to install a catch can.i see a western filter kit but a litte expensive for me.I mean that the original Mann filter -pro vent 200- costs in Italy half the price of Aussie kit ,but i need tubes ( i think normal engine tubes fuel and oil proof) and -most important think -the metallic support that i have to make from inox or zinc plated metal. Anibody can give me any help? Installed? Benefits,i mean real ones? I do not know the quality of diesel in Australia, but i want understand something more. Thank you.iw2lxz from Italy.
Amd yes, we can keep off the egr, but then car become outlaw. Especially if a car crash happen and somebody discover this, so insurance smiles!!!!!!

                  Hey mate,
I installed a provent purchased from ebay for a bit less than that once you have all the hose.
the provent was around the 200 mark with hoses coming to 100 but throw in some reducers that i had made at work and it add's up to about what youre saying.

I've been pretty surprised at the amount of oil and water coming from the engine. The oil is very thick and the water wouldn't be helping that.

All in all, its worth the money in my opinion. Get one installed, do a egr and intake clean on it and watch your fuel economy go down.
needless to say an engine in pretty expensive comparably.
