  • 120 MUST have upgrades or things to do

    hey people,

just purchased my first prado. went with a 2009, 120 Prado GXL turbo Diesel auto. she is completely stock standard with low k's. she will be a build in process and will get the works but not all at once.

In the coming days i will be putting new tyres all round (going with Coooper AT3), at the moment it has 4 different brands with different wear patterns haha. ive had coopers on my last 4x4 and they were great. i will also be putting in a cargo barrier for extra safety with the dog in the back. otherwise i know he will climb through. and a dash mat

    NOW

is there anything that should be done in the early stages now that will benefit me and the car? or is she pretty good to go? bullbar winch suspesion and the rest will come, once i figure out which way im going, tjm or arb.

    thanks

    Max

    Hi Max
    Welcome to the Forum.
Nice pick with the 09 GXL 120 mate.
So many enhancements to bolt, screw and wire onto these already comfortable and capable vehicles.
Pradopoint.com has a wealth of info about what modifications or accessories members have found to be the best for their needs.
You can point your Bank card in so many directions and of course retailers are only to happy to swipe it for us.
One of the first upgrades that most do with ease is the replacement of the "two jet" type windscreen washers that the Prado was born with.
They can be replaced with the Hilux type "Fan Spray" washers, for a better spread of water across the window. http://www.pradopoint.com.au/showthr...r-jets-upgrade
I found the cable tie method quick and non damaging.
Enjoy your Prado Max, enjoy reading Pradopoint.com and show us some pictures of your progress.
    Cheers
    Troy

      welcome Max

how many km's on the beast?
stay with the 265/65/17 tyres or you will mess around with the economy
i had coopers before & had 2 very costly failures so now run BFG's and they are awesome !!, but that's my opinion

we cant do any PM's at the moment so if you need some help call me on 0419824571 cheers James

Oh yeahs. I love the easy and quick mods that can make a difference. Will get onto it. Money is always the key. But with just buying a house I can't go lashing out just yet haha.

Yeah just bought to do the ring around for new tires. Was wondering about tyre size and whether worth it going little bigger. But I really can't be stuffed with headaches later on so will definitely stay with standard size. I had the cooper at3 when I did cape York a few years ago and they were great. Not a problem.

I will probably go with the Inawise tyre pressure monitoring system again. It's cheap easy insurance to kee an eye on things

The car has 130ks on it and completely stock. Been oookingfor a while for one and this came up so I just went for it. Haha

Thanks for the tips. Will definitely give a call when I need some helps or tips haha

Are oil catch cans worth it on these? Or not

        Thanks

        Max

Personally I'd go 265/70. It's a little bigger, no lift required and since yours is a later 120 model will bring your speedo to being spot on. Bigger tyres will always use more fuel but I think it's worth the small increase for more clearence and larger rolling diameter to get up stuff.
2007 GXL V6 - ARB Bullbar with LED lights, snorkel, extractors, 2 1/4" dual exhaust, K&N filter, dimpled/slotted rotors, headrest dvd players, Ebay Satnav/reverse camera, GME 3100TX, Tigerz11 Side awning on custom brackets with Maxtrax mounts, 300W Invertor, ARB Underbody protection, Lightbar and STZ 265/70 tyres.
Wish list in order I'll get them: Sliders, 2" lift, E-locker, Winch bar with winch.

              Welcome Max,

Here are several easy items for you to consider:

              1) Scangauge II - https://scangauge.com.au/

              2) IDrive Throttle Controller - https://idriveaustralia.com.au/

              3) UHF Radio - Your Cholice (I do I one For Sale on Gumtree and FB - https://www.facebook.com/groups/Qika...59058200812872

              4) Windscreen Washer Spray Nozzles - As per Foxclan message. A Must!! Its a big improvement on the STD crap Prado ones.

              5) Change Interior Globes to LED - (Someone has link here for that.) It will makes things brighter to see

These are just a few ideas for you to consider

injectors im not too sure when they were last checked. its due for a service in the next 1000ks so it will be a mentioning point.
due to moving house, the car will be getting serviced at ultra tune at golden grove. havent tried them out yet
tyres are too hard to tell the wear pattern. when i bought it off toyota it had 4 different tyres with different amounts of tread left. haha. just doing the ring around now to find the best prices and after sales service for new ones

                  1. i see there are others out there that do a similar job. i take it scanguage is the original one? and is it just worth it to spend the extra for the quality?

                  2. how do the throttle controllers make it faster? is it getting rid of the kag in foot position?

                  3. im considering spending the dollars and getting the GME XRS-370C

                  4. i think these are def on the to do list

                  5. can you actually buy led interior globes? for my last car i just wired some led strip light into the interior lights haha

thanks for the help and tips

I have an older scan gauge and just gives you all the extra info that's missing on the dash. I don't use mine all the time though I should look at mounting it and use it more (just because i like the extra info)
I have the cheap kings throttle controller and yes it takes the lag out of the pedal, most the time i use mine on half mode on the lowest setting and its still a noticeable difference.
have the xrs-330c and just waiting for the bull bar to be fitted in a weeks time then i can mount the antenna for it. Wont have to use my hand held which either takes away a cup holder or rolls off the front seat when doing steep hills lol.
On ebay you can get a led kit for all the interior lights and parkers for about $20 delivered which the one i got was 13 globes.

Ive done alot of things in a backwards kind of order as i still need good tires, but have done diff breather kit, exhaust, catch can, blanking plate, roof racks, lift kit as i needed new shocks, upgraded fog lights as the stock ones did nothing, upgraded headlights though not much better.

Roof racks and awning are a must for me for carrying gazebos, fishing rods etc.
and if you plan on using your prado to pull up to nice spots and relax then a couple of camping recliner chairs and the awning rolled are beaut on the beach or beside a lake 👍🏻
Next for me will be small roof cage to stow bulkier items on top and another battery and engel fridge to enjoy cold drinks when I'm on the said recliners 👍🏻
Love this prado, best car I've had 👌

I have to stick with the coopers. besides the 80,000km warranty, im gonna hate myself if i get a different brand and then have troubles with them haha.

the big question is what size do i go for? do i stick with the standard 265/65 17 or do i go for the 265/70 17? does the bigger size have any problems with interference or am i just better off sticking with standard size?

looked into suspension and when the funds are ready going to go with the Superior Engineering remote reservoir shocks. its about a 45mm lift and im keen on the idea that the shocks can be rebuilt. for a full kit they are a bit more pricey then others. about $2000.

the car currently has the parallel roof rails at the moment. can i take these off easily and put on 3 stanrdard roof racks? or do i need to keep them and get the roof racks that mount to them?

Checkout whiteys custom valved ironmans in the group buy section.

Yep can replace rails with 3 bars. I think the genuine ones are cheaper than rhino but are just rebadged rhinos

I went with Rola sports bars. They mount into the factory threaded holes, im pretty sure the rails are bolted into as well.
Was bloody hard to get the bolts started to fit them to the roof, like the thread is just a bit too short. I really had to push down on the bar to get the bolt started.
I like em though and not too noisy.
