  • DPF Issues - Post Recall

There's a thread on the DPF, there's a thread on the ECU Recall. This is an experience of the DPF post-recall...

So around 8000km's ago I got the ECU/ DPF recall done on the 2016 GXL. Since then, I've been running 0.7 L/100 more than what I did prior to that. However, today I managed to pour thick white smoke for around 3Km's - just accelerating from 0km to 80km up a slight incline (and I'm not a lead foot). The poor car behind was swamped. To me, that would suggest the DPF is cactus - it had two smaller white-smoke incidents pre-ECU update but Toyota weren't interested when I took it in for the recall ("this'll fix it!"). After the 3km's, absolutely nothing. I am going to assume that the white smoke was during a DPF Regen? As I say, I was accelerating and I didn't pay too much attention to the slight (if any) rise in Revs from a burn.

I'm wondering if anyone else has had this issue post the ECU update...?

I gather I will need to be pushing to get the DPF replaced (it's done 37,000km's only) under warranty. Would Toyota have anything to come back with noting that it's got a Catch Can fitted, and has done so since 9000kms?

That does not sound good at all - is your tailpipe clean of all soot?
I'd be taking it back to the dealers, that is not normal.

No issues since update for me. I think the burns are hotter as they're quicker than before as far as I can tell.
    Cheers
    Micheal.

Your 5th injector is most likely blocked from carbon buildup. You should be demanding a new DPF not asking.

Blast... I have no idea what a 5th injector has to do with anything, but I've seen it being a PITA on here before... Thanks Cuda - I'll take it in and see how I go with that. If that's it, then how would I stop it happening again? I get the Fuel Filter and Oil filter replaced every 10,000kms along with the catch can filter (Fuel is recommended around 40,000km's, and the Catch Can is 50,000kms, so I'm treating her well!)

Tail pipe is 'relatively' clean. It's not shiny steel, but nor is it as black as can be. When I took it into Berrima Diesel a few weeks ago I got them to have a look to check, and they're saying it's about normal (and they're not shy in pointing out DPF issues in Toyotas).

these diagrams will show you how the system works - http://toyota-club.net/files/faq/15-...engine_eng.htm

the 5th injector squirts in extra fuel to increase temps inside the DPF , in order to burn off the soot. If the 5th injector in blocked up it cannot do its job

You can remove the housing the DPF injector sits in and clean the port , it blocks up sometimes stopping the process from happening, then you simply do a forced regen and you are good to go

Thanks - but that's well above my home-mechanic ability. I can link up the lights, the UHF, and anything else electrical - but I'm a picture guy for all the black hander stuff. I might google the housing you talk about and see how I go...

I will get some pics of the outside when i can

                      Thanks for the help everyone. Took it into Toyota today, and they have booked a full day in a couple of weeks to go over it. Some interesting points;
                      1. The Service dude tried to tell me that that much white smoke was normal. I said it wasn't, but he insisted and then showed me the service bulletin that, actually, appeared to state that "smoke or soot" is a normal thing to be expelled on a DPF Burn and the I needn't worry. This was kilometres of white smoke...

However, the mechanic (not the service dude) suggested this was his first post-recall, and dropped in the conversation that there was a limit as to how many times the customer had to go back before they would do a full DPF replacement. I'll just keep going back every time it blows to get it done. I suggested the 5th injector (thanks Cuda et al) and he said it's a possibility and he'll have a look on the day it's booked to be looked at.

Overall, I was happy that I was spoken to by a diesel mechanic who seemed to know his stuff and he didn't brush me off at all. I've recently moved (to Canberra) and my previous location's Toyota was nothing like that at all (why I serviced it elsewhere). We'll see how we go, but again - thanks for all the efforts and I will keep you updated, and ask for photo's if they find something odd.

OK - so it was all checked out today. It's a DPF fail, and a 4 week wait for a new DPF from Japan.

As I have said before, it blew white smoke for a brief bit at around 9000km, then again at about 23,000km. I then had the ECU Recall done at about 27,000km and it blew a massive amount (went for a couple of kilometres) at the 32,000km mark. It's now done 33,000km and went into Toyota. I asked them to check the 5th injector - apparently all good. But the DPF 'failed' its test in accordance with some service bulletin they have. So all no good.

Still, at least they've been pretty helpful (Fyswick/ Phillip Toyota in Canberra). No hassle, no questions asked (other than what Berrima Diesel use for their oil, which I could provide - as I have only ever had it serviced there). So happy with this mob. Here's hoping it's all good Post-ECU Recall with a new DPF.
