  • Lower Control Arm - Replace In Entirety or Re-fit Bushes?

When installing new springs/shocks today we noticed one lower control arm bush was not in the greatest of condition (left had side, rear bush) - Serviceable but will need to be replaced in the not too distant future.

Was wondering what experience people have had with replacing with a complete arm rather than purchasing bushes and having the old ones removed and new ones pressed in?

I don't have access to presses etc so would have to pay to have them done. By the time I pay for bushes and then to have the old ones removed and new ones pressed in....am I likely to be getting close to the cost of a new pre-fitted arm? I read the bushes can be a bit of a bugger to remove and press in properly so got me wondering.....

Also, is it common to have to replace the cams and bolts?....

Just getting some ideas together so I can prepare for doing it down the track.

    Cheers,
    Bart.

Bushes come with original LCAs, and looking at the design, I suspect the LCAs "rings" are clamped and welded around the bushes during manufacturing. They aren't actually a tube in the first case, it's rolled steel.

Anyway there is risk of new bushings coming loose after replacement, and they only need to be microscopically loose to allow movement, which creates wear, and finally a completely stuffed new bush and stuffed LCA. How often this occurs I can't say, except from my own experiences. 4 bushes changed - 1 had movement immediately after and worked entirely loose within a year, a second was completely loose a couple years later. So one LCA stuffed in year 1 and the second 2-3 years later. Personally, I would always replace. The reduced labour cost helps, and even more labour saving if replacing LBJs at the same time.

Cams/bolts - depends on the history of the vehicle. Mine was 1st owner / city use, so was easy enough and they're still in use today. Others which were used over the decades for 4wding or near beach, will likely be corroded, and worst case require cutting of LCA for removal.

Thanks Glen....that was exactly the info I was after.

40mm lift was has been done (fronts on weekend, rears today) and car feels great but steers like a wondering goat. Alignment is out a mile (clearly visible) and the drive back from the workshop saw the outer tyre tread quite warm, inner was cold!! Alignment is booked tomorrow and am crossing my fingers that they can do it and don't tell me the bushes need replacing first. My plan is to do them in a couple of months. Car steered fine before the lift so just hoping they can align it back and we can look at the LCA in a few weeks.

      Thanks again for the advice.

      Cheers,
      Bart.
