  • Switch wire for Spotties install

    Hi All,

It's probably been answered but i cant seem to find any useful info particular to the 120.

What colour is the wire to tap into for spotties switch wire? (LHS)

Is this -ve or +ve switched ??

    Thanks guys!

    Cheers
    Phil

Some models are +ve, some are -ve. It's a pain I know. Mine was +ve but most are -ve.

The easiest way to check I found was use a multimeter on the headlight wires and take it from which wire goes to 12V when highbeam is turned on. Either then tap into it there or do what I did and find the same colour wire (can't recall colour sorry) and tap into in the driver foot well. It's just a short wire to the switch then and doesn't have to run through the engine bay.
2007 GXL V6 - ARB Bullbar with LED lights, snorkel, extractors, 2 1/4" dual exhaust, K&N filter, dimpled/slotted rotors, headrest dvd players, Ebay Satnav/reverse camera, GME 3100TX, Tigerz11 Side awning on custom brackets with Maxtrax mounts, 300W Invertor, ARB Underbody protection, Lightbar and STZ 265/70 tyres.
Wish list in order I'll get them: Sliders, 2" lift, E-locker, Winch bar with winch.

      Thanks Billzor,

I ended up doing as you said, and wired it all up for -ve switching. (KZJ-120) 2006.

I'm using a narva switch that looks like the carling switches that ARB use for lockers, but seem to be having a strange result. The spotties switch on and off correctly when headlights are on and using the indicator stalk, however if i switch off headlights, and leave the spotties switch on, the spotties come back on.... whiuch means the handbrake will probably flatten the battery next time she takes it out at night.......

      Any ideas????

      cheers
      Phil

I'm thinking i just need to use accessory power for pin 85, instead of 'always on' power.

You need to tap the headlight +ve supply (red/green on L/H headlamp or red/white on R/H headlamp - right side has the same colour wire for supply and switched earth for low beam) for the relay coil (86) and the earth side of the coil (85) goes to the high beam -ve switched side of the headlight (red/green wire).

              Further to last post...

Wired it all up as per diagram, but it didn't work. Ended up giving up for the night and packed it all up. Will try again tonight after work. I'm using a 3 way terminal block to make it easy to test before doing a more permanent connection, as Ive already used a bunch of joiners / heatshrink, that goes to waste if i change anything....

              Cheers

When you say it didn't work, can you elaborate? Didn't work at all or worked incorrectly i.e driving lights on low beam etc?

Using a multimeter locate 2 wires on your headlight that have 12v across them when high beam is on. Then check that there is 0v when on low beam, parkers or lights off. These 2 wires are your signal. Splice into them and run 1 wire thru your cabin switch and on to pin 85 on the relay. The other wire goes straight to 86. Connect pin 30 to the battery positive via a fuse. Pin 87 to spots. Other spot wire to earth. This method works with positive or negative earthed systems.
If your cabin switch has more than 2 terminals, make sure you get the connections on them correct as shown in the diagram earlier in regards to an illuminated switch.
If you are using an illuminated switch ensure that the switch wire coming from the headlight splice has 12v to earth. If you get that wrong the spots should still work but the illumination will not.
