  • tyre size? what do you run

    hey people

looking at getting new rubber for the car.

    what sizes are people running?

is it better to stick with the 265/65 17

    or

can you easily fit the 265/70 17 with out them hitting the guards?

    thanks heaps in advance

265/70 work fine. No rubbing. I'd personally go there. Slight increase in fuel usage.
2007 GXL V6 - ARB Bullbar with LED lights, snorkel, extractors, 2 1/4" dual exhaust, K&N filter, dimpled/slotted rotors, headrest dvd players, Ebay Satnav/reverse camera, GME 3100TX, Tigerz11 Side awning on custom brackets with Maxtrax mounts, 300W Invertor, ARB Underbody protection, Lightbar and STZ 265/70 tyres.
Wish list in order I'll get them: Sliders, 2" lift, E-locker, Winch bar with winch.

Yeah I went up to 70s with no rubbing issue. Gives you a slight lift too which all adds up. Your speedo will be affected, but in a good way more than likely. Get a gps speedo app for your phone and you'll more than likely see that your prado's said speed is in fact out (reads faster) by about 4kph. Going up to 70s will make your speedo spot on... at least was in my case.

I like that *slight* - if I had to do it again on my '04 I'd go back to 265/65

Wouldn't the L/100 km be skewed towards a higher reading if you run 70 section tyres? The car readings will be based on 65 section tyres with a shorter circumference so any increase in fuel use showing will be offset by the increased distance travelled per tyre revolution when running 70s.

Once you allow for the larger diameter in the calculation, there is still extra fuel usage. It's in the physics. A larger tyre (and most will choose a LT construction tyre) will have more weight further out from the rotational axis. This needs more energy to turn and stop the tyres. More energy = more fuel usage and braking effort.

Im running 265/70/17 Cooper AT3s which are LT. No major rubbing, only some small scuffing on the front chassis, but very minor.

I'm at the same cross road.

I mainly 4x4 to Fraser, would the 265/70/17 be a huge benefit to the foot print of my tire in the soft sand comparied to 265/65/17 or is it very minor?

The difference would be minimal. Smaller tyres actually can perform better in sand as well.
The footprint difference when you air them down could be exactly the same with about a half psi more let out of the 65. Than the 70.
The 70 rolling diameter and weight is larger. So the gearing down low will be needing more power to push them.

                    Thanks Piggy.

I guess if most of my driving is done on road anyways, the bigger tyre will only cost me more.

                      Kept standard size.

Pros: Cheaper than a 70 size. No problem with fitting / LT construction / etc
Cons: It gives you very slightly less clearance than a larger 70 tyre would...

I"m about to change rubber and wheels. I have 256/70 17's on atm with a 2 inch lift. No hassles at all.

I have read the other threads on tyres/wheels combos but no one has gone to wider tyres for various reasons.

Legalities aside Does anyone know of people running 285/70 on stock UCA's and wheels or slightly less positve offset wheels (say +10/20) with 305/65's???

How it was achieved would be good also.

285/70 won't fit on stock UCA's and wheels. Need less offset +10 or lower.
305's need a bigger lift and shit load of money thrown at it. Some have done it but big lift's, 0 offset wheels, new UCA's. $$$$

Charlie WRT 285/70 tyres on a 120 1KD (particularly Auto) would be a disaster (apart from the required offset / new wheels etc.) your final gearing will be way out due to the big increase in rolling diameter. Don't do it!

Some have fitted 265/70, but "square shoulder" of some tread profiles may mean tyres will rub at full lock.
