  • Back door lock jamming - Is this a Prado thing?

    Hi all
I noticed the back door is now difficult to open after a driving down some rough tracks. (I have been told this is a problem with some Prados.) I cleaned out the lock and jam the best I could but to no avail. I assume the door has drooped because of the banging around. Has this happened to you?
    Cheers

Using laymans terms as I am not mechanical at all, after a LOT of dirt and gravel roads I find that the rubber seal gets filled with dust, causing it to be too firm and does not compress when the door shuts.

I think it makes the closing action too tight and when I try to open it the lock is under pressure.

If I feel the rubber seal on the closing side it feels hard so I press and squeeze the dust out of the weep holes lower down and just on the bottom of the rubber. After 10 mins or so getting small bits of dust and grit out the holes I can get it to start falling from further up the rubber seal, maybe 200-300mm up the side seal. It is quite fiddly but has definitely improved mine.

Now that I am back home on sealed roads I do it every now and then and a bit more comes out each time, quite good now

Ours got very stiff after crossing the Simpson, but could still open it. Met another Prado 150 owner who could no longer open their back door at all. Had to rotate their storage unit so they could access it. So, yes, it's a Prado thing. 150 specifically, as my 120 never had a problem.

Same issue with the 120 as the 150 (in my case anyway). The door lock also fills with dust (wasn't aware about the seal but I will check mine tomorrow - thanks ozimacca)). If the door won't open I can usually bounce it open by holding the latch open whilst I push the door towards the truck then jerk it back open. Brutal but when you have a cargo barrier, the door is the only way in. Once it is open I flood the lock with a spray lube and then clean up all the excess lube and dust that flows out of the lock. I know the lube attracts dust but this is the best method I have found.Keep a can of lock lube in the truck and spray the lock regularly when in really dusty terrain. If your door has dropped, you may need to adjust the lock to compensate

If the door has dropped a tad you can use washers as a spacer on the bottom hinge to raise the lock side of the door a little. With an extra pair of hands, slide them under the hinge and then feed the bolts through. If your washers are a bit too large, you may need to grind a flat tip on one side to get them to fit. Had to do this to mine after two Cape York trips due to sag.

I have also found that after travelling dusty roads the door latch doesn't want to work,
I now hose out the lock when this happens and that fixes the issue.

Don't need to use washers, the hinges are adjustable via the bolts at the rear pillar.
