  • Android tablet for navigation

As far as I understand most Android devices, including tablets, have GPS receivers. Has anybody here used tablets as navigators away from the mobile networks? If this is possible it opens great possibilities, as there are plenty of downloadable maps of all kinds on the net.

I have used oziexplorer software on Android for a number of years - currently on a Samsung - works really well. I use Hema, Wesprint and EOTopo maps. But all this is not free - but it's worth it.

Yes, if you have offline maps, you only need the GPS signal. There's no need for mobile networks. I used HEMA on Android.

There are also apps that allows you to take snapshots of Google Maps satellite view. Then you won't need to rely on offline maps if you are just navigating through terrain. However, offline maps have interesting points already embedded in them such as camp sites, lookouts, gates, etc.

Used an Android tablet with CoPilot maps when I went touring through Europe a few years ago, worked great. Also downloaded maps for Oz, but not so great off-road (the maps that is).

A real good one is MYTRAILS for navigating and downloading offline satellite and tracks. I find the micosoft sat map is more recent than google sat

Like Suitcase above I use an old (now) wifi only Samsung tab 3 8.0 with Oziexplorer as off road navigation. Hema and topographical maps can be located on the interwebs if you know where to look. You can use the demo for Ozi but the full licence is only $25 USD.

Works really well. I use dropbox and dropbox sync to auto sync the track files and waypoints to the home pc as you travel. Connection to the net is done with my phone as a wifi hotspot.

I also use google maps for local tracks in the state forests in my area that others have created such as this https://goo.gl/d8zpxo
Just add it as a layer in Maps

            Cheers

I replaced the radio in my 120 with a Polaris unit that runs windows CE, it has oziexplorer on
it and I run a variety of maps including Hema.

I also have a Samsung tablet that I run ozi on and don't forget you can also run ozi on a android
phone such as the Samsung S5 etc.

It always pays to have a backup, I have had SD cards fail on both the radio and the phone resulting
in ozi not working. These days always make sure the radio, tablet and phone version are working before we head bush.

We use a Lenovo 10" Android tablet for navigation with Memory Map and OsmAnd+.

Memory map seems easier to use than OziExplorer and you can buy "proper" maps easily. There aren't any great free maps for it which is an advantage for OziExplorer.

OsmAnd+ is an Android app for Open Street Map. The OSM maps themselves aren't that great but it does allow you to set the map to Bing Satellite images. You can then scroll around at various zoom levels to "save" the data on the tablet so it will work when you have no internet connection. I found this the easiest way to do it - I tried some other solutions which tried to create map files from the satellite data but they were much more awkward. I sat down one night and scrolled around the places we were likely to go - time consuming but it doesn't require much brainpower so you can do it while watching TV. Probably better to do it on a home internet connection too - it uses lots of data!

We use a vehicle mount from Industrial Evolution with a RAM "X" tablet mount - super solid. I've been meaning to post something about it... just haven't had a chance.
