  • How old is too old for a performance upgrade?

    Hi there

First time on the Prado point but would like some feedback.
Just recently started towing a decent size camper and also towing a heavy float regularly.

Our trusty old 120 series is still going strong but feel it needs a bit of a boost in power.
320,000 Kay's and no trouble so far and no interest in upgrading to next model as we now have the extras and setup we like!
Has anyone upgraded engine mapping to gain power on aging motor and what issues if any should we expect?
Thinking about the stienbauer module and chasing about 20% more torque.

You'll need to provide a a bit more info about your engine, gearbox etc

If it is a 3L diesel, start first by cutting out the original muffler and fitting a straight through sports muffler. Stuffing more diesel down it's neck does no good unless the air can get through unimpeded. That will not stress the motor at all and may satisfy you without any more mods. I had a DTRONIC chip since I bought it in 2009, but got more out of changing the muffler a few years a go.
      cheers

This is a very interesting thread . i have an old 90 series 3.4l. I was thinking the same thing . how old is to old for upgrades. mine has 250k on the clock . stock standard . its in good shape.but if there is better hp , maybe that would help a little on fuel.

There is no magic way to make HP, you must burn fuel at a certain increasing rate to get more power. If you want economy as well then you must burn gasoline/air at the Stoichiometric Air/fuel Mixture (about 14.6/1). This is the rate at which all fuel is burnt in the combustion. The only way to make HP is to burn more of that mixture by increasing the combustion volume or pushing more through the chamber, ie push it in and let it out, or some combination of the two. Free up the exhaust (but that may have some effect on the location of the powerband), and/or turbo/supercharge it.
Technically there's obviously more to it than this basic explanation, and certain driving habits/tricks can help, but you can't get around the chemistry! Usually you get one or the other, or you decide to have something in the middle.
          cheers

Very true Steve and more importantly you have to do the sums.
A full 3" exhaust is around $700, plus fitting. I noticed no power difference with mine although it did lower EGT's.
Next a chip. Steinbauer or DP will set you back around $1200 and then add more $$ for a bit of a tweak from a tuner.
To make use of the chip's extra fuel you need more air. You can increase the boost a tad with a cheap boost tee or a more expensive electronic boost control but you're still limited by the ecu's preset limit. (around 1.0bar)
The stock ecu can be replaced by a tuneable design like an Adaptronic but now you're looking at real $$$.
The stock turbo will also run right out of efficiency once pushed and simply heats the air charge. That leads to a high flowed turbo or perhaps an aftermarket bad boy.
The factory intercooler is your next obstruction, seems it's a never ending story.
I've decide to live with my old girl's low power and just change gears.
            It's cheaper than changing cars.

get a compression and a leak seal test done, that will tell you how good the engine is before anything else can happen, but at 255k it should be fine, mine was great at 340k, money is the next step ...

changing the factory cast headers to pacemaker extractors and a full exhaust helped it a lot

wow there are quite a few options , i would imagine all have been tried tested by someone at some time .
The silver bullet solution seems as though its all of them but none specifically
                .
I'm not into a noisy load truck type 4x4 owner nor am i impressed with the numbers that just keep clicking upwards for just a bit better performance.
I thing the mod that most seem to feel as though it was worth it is the exhaust.
I have always loved the way a v8 sounds but i dont have one . I wouldnt imaging how a twin exhaust may sound , or even if its a good idea .
Opening up the exhaust i guess is the idea , but i dont want a very noisy bus also . A cool sound is great but once again its not a v8 .
oceanracer suggested pacemaker extractors and a full exhaust . The full exhaust means over size pipes , and what exhaust? Did you exhaust end up very load and droney. oh and why pacemaker and not other brands. Is there such a difference?

good place to start is with the basics, if its a 1KZ, compression test, injector rebuild and then exhaust, boost and a tune
