  • Starting problem followed by warning lights on dash

I was wondering whether anyone else has had the same problem as me with their Prado not starting properly.

    I have a 150 series diesel/auto.

Recently, I noticed that every now and again when I started the vehicle it sounded as if the starter motor stayed on for just a second or so after the car actually started (like the old days when you would turn the key after the car had already started).

About a week ago, I went to start the Prado and it turned over and stalled. When I tried to restart the vehicle the starter turned the motor over (strongly) but the Prado would not start. So I had to press the start/button to stop it turning the motor over. I left it for a few seconds, and then pushed the start button and after a bit of coughing and spluttering the engine started. But after it started the VSC light stayed on, the 4LO light blinked continuously, and the yellow engine light stayed on.

After a bit of research online (as it was a Sunday) it appeared as if those three lights together were a generic warning. The car started no problem after and ran fine.

The following day, the warning lights reset and turned themselves off.

Everything seemed fine, but it has happened again, and the warning lights are back on again.

Any ideas on what might be causing this?

    Cheers

    Jamesy

    Perhaps a blocked fuel filter

200 Series Landcruisers have a similar problem I'm told, apparently caused by low battery voltage or a battery on it's way out.

I have the exact same intermittent problem with my 09 150 diesel with 210k on the clock. Cranks and tries to fire as normal but for the next half to two seconds sounds like the starter is still engaged. I used a OBD reader when the warning lights were on and the code given refered to the crank angle sensor.
Planning to have the Mech look at it at the next service.

I too have this problem. Took it to Toyota and they kept it overnight - the warning lights never reset themselves. They reset the lights and fault code and suggested that I vary whom I buy diesel from as it could have been a backfire due to ethanol in the fuel. I have always only used BP. I did this - filled up with Caltex and a week later it did the same thing but this time the lights reset themselves. Code was PO335 Crankshaft Sensor "A" Circuit Malfunction. Any ideas? I have a new battery and the car has done 99K.

I took my Prado to my mechanic who is also an auto electrician. He said that my model Prado (Nov 2009) had an issue with the alternator, and they were renowned for having problems. He rebuilds them for a local Toyota dealership. For reasons he did not know, when the alternator starts to die it can effect the computer and the way the vehicle starts. When he first came across the problem in another vehicle, the error messages referred to a problem with the crank. I have read elsewhere people having this error message when they had a starter problem similar to mine. Anyway, he rebuilt my alternator and so far so good.

            Hope that helps some others.

Hi MalG - not sure if you have fixed the issue in your vehicle, but the problem in my vehicle was associated with the alternator. Hope that helps.

When a similar thing happened to me Toyota told me it was the starter motor and replaced it under warranty. Have not had it happen again since then. Mine is a Nov 2009 build Kakadu V6 Auto.

Same happened in my 2010 model. Turns out the alternator was on the way out, and it was throwing out electrical interference that was messing around with the crankshaft sensor which is located next to the alternator. Same code as MalG above. New high output alternator and no more codes.

I would have to agree that this is alternator related. Around 8 weeks ago I started having the intermittent starting problem and this week the alternator layed down and died. Off to the auto sparky for a replacement. My first real problem with the Prado in 8 years and 250k.

Thanks to this feed I escaped having my crankshaft sensor replaced! I had exactly the same symptoms as Jamesy. My mechanic (very experienced Prado mechanic) got the starter looked at - no problems there. He actually ordered a crankshaft sensor before I found this thread (PradoPoint was not available for about a week). I suggested we change the alternator, which we did and problem solved! Now to find a place to replace faulty diodes in my old alternator.

                          Hi all
my prado 2011 D4D was identical to Jamesy and I ended up getting the alternator changed, mind you only 90000km in the car. It has been fine but last night same symptoms again, after only a couple on months with a new alternator but it DID NOT throw any codes this time.
Can anyone suggest please? After reading comments I’m thinking get the crank angle sensor changed?
                          cheers GW

Had exactly the same issue recently and it turned out to be the alternator was on the way out. Dash used to light up every now and then, then one day I jumped in and the main battery was dead, like 1v dead - regulator had failed and drained the battery, I assume I had a little heater under the bonnet for a while there
