  • 90 Prado access to fuel pump

Hi all thanks in advance for any replies .
I have a 2001 Prado 3.4 5vzfe (girlfriends) Do I have to drop fuel tank to replace the fuel pump.
Is there no access hatch internal of body to pump housing, Dual tanks, IM assuming pump is in rear tank? not side mounted one.
I cant find a link or how to video anywhere specific to this model .

There is a high pressure fuel pump in both fuel tanks which are controlled by the main/sub tank switch on the dash.
Diesel models have a slightly different system.
You will have to drop the tanks out to R&R the fuel pumps. Why do you want to replace the fuel pump/s?

Hard starting and starvation on acceleration which was a shudder and miss intermittently under load but has progressed to thru all gears in low revs and hard acceleration.

Coils and leads replaced. sparkplugs changed over twice ,air and fuel filter changed.

Old maf cleaned no change new maf installed no change getting worse ,

NO codes reading after scan by two different scanners . Last options are fuel pump , which I didn't know there was two, or fuel pressure regulator, and crank position sensor, Basically im down to component change out to find fault.
This fault occurs either on sub or main.

As it effects both tanks, I would suspect a blocked fuel filter. It is underneath the floor near the left hand rear passenger door.

          yes done that twice .
          just pulled tank and pump
.Bench tested pump ,shows no fluid exiting pump, removed pump filter run up and it pumps a low flow amount. re run pump bench test again (no filter) and shot fluid out at a great rate. no pressure ,lo pressure, hi pressure or flow rate anyway.
ILL reinstall new pump tomorrow with new inline fuel filter and see if all ok .
The pump removed looks to be factory original ,vehicle is 400000 + ks so it needs replacing anyway .

just a note for members to make it easy pulled back carpet in cargo area ,removed float and hose syphoned the full tank of fuel out straight into another car ,this depressurised system and saved heaps of time draining the tank. Why they put an access in the floor pan for the float and not the pump as well is odd,

            LEETHAL.
yes two pumps but one is in the main for pressure to injectors and the other is in sub only for transference of fuel from sub to main is that correct ?
Learning curve for me this stuff I like mechanical fuel pumps and holley carbs.

Pretty sure that's for the diesel only. Haven't had trouble with mine (touch wood) so have never investigated further.

                  Hi Jafa,

No both are high pressure pumps, with the 90 series both tanks will feed high pressure fuel to the fuel rail when selected.
There is a solenoid operated valve just forward of the sub (side) tank which "redirects" the fuel flow, note the diesel system is different.
Surprising that both in tank pumps have the same issue, is the intake filter still attached to both pumps? I have seen where this filter is missing which allows any contaminants in the fuel to damage the pump.
You state you bench tested the pump with out the filter and had good flow, so sounds like a blocked pre-filter. New pumps usually come with a new pre-filter so be sure to fit it.

Just a thought , i suppose you have already done it.
On my mothers car miizi fto v6 96 black , she is 73 would you believe it! anyway she started getting an issue just like what you described . In the fto the flow sensor is adjustable .. The flow sensor was seriously dirty , a good clean and adjustment solved her problem . She has gone back to being grany gangster lead foot .
                    and loving it.
Just a though to check that sensor for filth and even test it to see if it working properly if that is possible ,400 k is quite a few km , and those sensors can cause more troubles than what we think..
Hope you find a solution soon.

well there you go . Issue in the end was poor manufacture of coils. These were aftermarket Goss coils that i originally replaced in previous service .
Issue being all three coil boots were of different length varying 5 to 10 mil.
Internal electrodes of coils all different length. 15 TO 20 MM. this was causing to bigger distance from coil to PLUG a weak spark occurring.
We ran a mates oscilloscope and found it dropping out, also set a timing light on leads closest to coil pack and watched light fluttering.

Then talked to a Toyota mechanic guru who disagreed and said TPS.
So put one in and no change pulled coils put new ones in turned around saw coils standing on tailgate of truck noticed different boot height and check over with verniers and found more measurement problems. Went for drive with new coils problem gone, new coils fitted tighter into plug recess also, but 1 coil boot had different design profile but its working so it stays in .
Goss happy to replace faulty parts. AutoOne the seller of coils wanked on and treated me like an idiot for bringing the faulty components back for warranty claim . still haven't received refund so wont be buying equipment from there store anymore .

Glad you solved your problem . I was working on my old 250 kawa, and stripped down those carbies so many times , cuz i was absolutely sure it was a fuel problem ,... It turned out to be one of the coil packs .... I was happy to have found the problem , bit i waisted so much time and effort for being so stubborn , rather that starting from scratch and checking electrical system first ....Ive learnt my lesson and you are just confirming it for me. .
