  • What is the difference

Well as most of us know the prado 90 series is clearly an all wheel drive

Thats all fine but on a frazer trip i did an experiment

I drove in 4x4 in 4H ,it drove ok as was expected both in soft sand at high tides and internal trails.

But to my surprise the vehicle drove perfectly well if not better / perhaps lighter,, driving it for half the time on the island in standard drive. (meaning without the use of 4x4 gearing) That is the all wheel drive mode...
My question is what is the difference between the ''all wheel drive'' and the'' 4h 4x4 gear'' ?.

    The 4L expains itself .

The main difference between AWD and 4WD is that in 4WD the centre diff is locked.

I can see why it felt better/lighter with the centre unlocked as is allows more 'slip' between front and rear.

ps the prados are VERY capable even with the centre diff unlocked!
    Cheers

Thanks for the reply ''one twenty'', but let me see if i can wrap my head around it.!

The center diff is locked , meaning the transfer case???
Which means the frount and rear at that point are at sync with revolutions ???.

I think im still at a lost i'm afraid . or did i guess right?

And Yes I must admit the old prado handled very well indeed without the 4x4 gearing.

Im the same as you and have yet found an actual "real world" advantage for any situation using 4HL for the Prado. If people do think it is an advantage at times in the fairly under powered 90 series I think it's in their head to be honest. 4HL is advantageous for high speed driving where you're throwing the car into and around corners on a high speed loose surface. 4HL comes into its own for a really powerful car like a rally car when on a dirt road and accelerating hard through and out of corners and relying on the front wheels powerfully free spinning forward to help the car quickly find its feet & drive in the direction the front wheels are pointing. It aids when driving fast and aggressively on a firm loose surface, through bends and corners, and when doing all this in a car with a low centre of gravity and high powered engine. If you're driving the Prado on any road or track in a way where you think 4HL is going to aid you then you're driving the Prado in a dangerous manner and need to slow down immediately. It has no advantage over the normal 4H in the Prado. At very low speeds just use 4LL instead of 4HL for obvious reasons if you again thought 4HL was going to help.
Steering in 4HL feels crap too when just driving normally on an offroad track.

Basically in Normal H if 1 wheel loses traction, all the power goes to that wheel and you go nowhere.
In HL, the centre diff is locked, so 50% of the drive goes to the rear and 50% to the front, so if 1 wheel loses traction, at least 1 other wheel will have drive. If 1 wheel at the front loses traction and 1 wheel at the back loses traction, you go nowhere again.
If you're driving on fairly firm sand then normal H is probably fine, I use HL when i'm driving on the beach or sandy trails that can get quite soft in places because in my opinion its better to have as much traction available as possible to keep momentum going and avoid getting bogged, obviously if its really soft and/or hilly use LL to get the most torque possible. HL Is also handy driving on pea gravel roads, where even with full time 4wd the back end can get a bit loose.

Oh , I sorta get it now . as i didnt get stuck on the island , i didn't notice the differences. cheers people . Its good to have a better understanding of things and how they are working mechanically as that would change what you would do in a situation .
