  • Moment of Weakness

    Gday Lads,

Had a retarded moment today when my local mechanic rang to say the standard 100K service on the GX was turning expensive as I needed brake rotors and pads as well as front struts as the current ones were leaking, injector clean, transmission flush and brake fluid flush. A total figure of $2600 crackers to which I obviously baulked at given that I was only expecting an oil and filter change.

Anyway the short of it is I pressed the go button on the rotors and pads for $495 fitted and the front struts for $850 fitted.

Now feel free to give me a heap of shit given that I'm thinking I got bent over.

As I had done zero research on struts what I want to know from the pradopoint knowledge bank is the following. I asked what struts he put in and was told a set of heavy duty KYB brand units with a 2 inch lift option later down the track. Now I cant see any distinguishing model numbers or stickers on the struts to tell me if hes put some cheap and nasty gear on the bus and is passing them off as KYB's. Have any of you fellas got any images of your KYB's? Also for that price I'd assume the coil over springs would be new as part of the struts, they look shiny but the old ones were pretty shiny too.

To top it off when I climbed under this evening for a look one of the boots on the top of the shocky is split which I assume will need to be replaced if Im to keep dirt and crud out of the hydraulics. How important is this for me to make a fuss over?

A clever invoice with no part numbers on it hasn't made things easier.

    Thoughts?

    Cheers

I'd be asking for more info on your invoice.
A split boot is a split boot. It's made without a split for a reason.
No part numbers or stickers is interesting. Maybe a call to KYB Australia is needed to ask some questions.

100k for rotors is seemingly quick. Especially for rears. Unless the pads had screwed them? I got over 200k on my rears.

I'd say you've been bent. And he hasn't used KY(B) lube to make it easier. (See what I did there?)..

My rotors had to be machined at 60,000k.

FWIW, We had done a lot of steep descents over a couple of weeks in the Blue Mountains and Snowies, with the van behind.
Even though in high range 2nd gear to uitlise engine braking, I should have used low range to conserve the brakes more.

The only time I've had to replace rotors in a 4x4, (on a different brand vehicle) was after going through a flood-way with a foot of water in it.
We had been doing some pretty heavy braking beforehand so the rotors were very hot and didn't like the instant cooling.

Yours must have been pretty far gone to need to replacing rather than machining.
Have you had them machined before perhaps?
Did you feel any pulsing through your brake pedal? That's a sure give away the rotors are warped.

An update, spoke to the KYB office today and although the lady on the phone was only slightly helpful she did say that there should be some identfying marks on the strut body. In the dying light this afternoon I have now located the model stamped on the body and it does look to be genuine. I guess I just expected to see the branding identified more readily as advertising. I asked the fitter to take a look at the splits in the boot and he rang KYB and apparently they come with the splits in them. Maybe its to let air pressure out, I work with engineers most days and haven't yet worked out why they do some things.

As for the brake rotors I guess the fitting of new units over machining is neither here nor there. He said they were worn, I listened and had asked him to check as there was noticeable shuddering even with slight braking.

So all in all I think the only negative thing to come out of this is don't make quick decisions when it comes to suspension replacement components especially when you then stumble upon the Foam Cell group buy!!
