  • Another Traction Control Question

Can't find an answer to my question on a search of the forum or in the Owners manual so hope I'm not missing something.

I've got a 2016 GX Auto Prado & have been trying to find out how/if the traction control works in low range. When I put the transmission into low range the TRC Off light comes on so does traction control still work in low or not?

I've driven the car in several off road situations such as the Blue Rag track in the High Country, CREB track in Nth Qld, & plenty of forestry roads in SE Qld without an issue. The car just goes wherever it's pointed so it would seem that some form of extra traction is kicking in but I'm confused as to why the TRC Off light would be turned on if I was just being left with open diffs when in low range. Seems odd that traction control wouldn't be activated when in low range as this is just the time it's really needed.

Anyone have any info to help me understand how this system works & what's happening?

    Many Thanks

Most of what you need is in the additional 4WD booklet (not the base user-manual) you would have got with your car. It's all in there - what works/ doesn't work and when.

Try holding down the TRC button for about 5 seconds when you have engaged L4. You may have inadvertently somehow disabled it while in L4 before.

Are you syre its not the stability control light.
Im pretty sure in L4 it turns off automatically but leaves traction turned on

As per Hally and then Cuda. L4 turns off stability control and then holding the button down for 5 seconds + turns off the traction control.

Thanks for the reply's so far.

I've been through the Off Road User Manual & the owner's manual more than once & haven't been able to find anything to tell me what's happening.

It's definitely the TRC OFF light that comes on, not the Stability Control.

Haven't tried holding on the TRC button on when selecting Low Range so that could be an option but the car still seems to be using some form of traction control even with the light on as it (so far) has gone anywhere I've taken it on some quite steep loose off road tracks.

I guess what I'm reading into the reply's so far is that the TRC OFF light shouldn't be coming on when selecting Low Range. Is this assumption correct?

            Thanks again

I'm interested in the response to this as well.

I've noticed my TRC OFF light is on in low range sometimes as well, but you can clearly hear/feel the traction control still kicking it.

Actually, scratch that. I tested this morning and it's the "stability control off" light that's coming on, not the traction control light. Traction control only turns off if you hold down the traction control button for 5 seconds as expected.

Just checked again in Lo Range & now only the Stability Control Off light is coming on so seems as if I'd probably somehow pressed the TRC switch inadvertently.

Apologies for the confusion & thanks to all those who replied.

While this is resolved just to make it clear:

In H4 TRC is throttle and wheel brake affected. The car can close the throttle and brake a spinning wheel. VDC will operate independently for “steering” the car with the rear brakes and partially the front to prevent slides.

You can turn off TRC in H4 with a quick tap of the button. Useful for gaining wheel spin speed in slippery conditions or soft ground. VDC will not interfere here until you really start pickup up decent pace (pretty hard to slide if you standing still). So on a beach VDC should interfere much if at all. Very soft sand it can. TRC will NEVER activate on sand unless one wheel somehow starts to spin which is very rare if all 4 are planted which is normally the case.

In L4 VDC is off no matter what and TRC changes to A-TRC which allows full throttle control to the driver and has a more aggressive brake action to stop wheel spin instantly and it’s VERY effective. In H4 you would be able to rely on momentum to clear obstacles, but where speed is too dangerous A-TRC makes up for no momentum and allows you to crawl very slowly over with two wheels on the ground only. The speed is way too low for VDC to be needed or even effective.

Locking the diff. Had no bearing on the above other than to improve front to rear drive torque.

Thanks for the excellent summary of how this all works Symo.

This is not explained in either the Owners handbook or the Off Road manual that I could find, so knowing how it all works is very useful when off road.

As an aside, I have had the traction control kick in when in sand. It happened when crossing very rutted sand dunes in the Simpson Desert. Easy to get wheels in the air when this occurs!

                      Thanks again
