It’s not just Toyota, every manufacturer specifies that a service should be carried out after a specified time or specified mileage, whichever comes first.
If your complaining about the capped price services wait until you have to pay for the services at normal prices once the capped price ones finish.

The example I gave in my first post was of my wife's Audi A3 2.0 litre diesel bought new in the UK in 2014.
I expected the service interval to be miles or time as you have described but was pleasantly surprised to find that it was distance covered only. I queried this with the dealer who said "the car will tell you when the service is due" It was over two years old before it had covered 12,000 miles (not Kms) and had it's first and only dealer service.
I have never ever had a garage service any vehicle unless it was under guarantee as I think they would all use the fact that it hadn't been service by themselves as a cop out.
I definitely wont be paying my servicing dealer for servicing once the guarantee runs out on the Prado as I have already asked them how much a non capped service is! I much prefer to do it myself, even if special tools are required I would rather buy them.

I have just returned from six months overseas to find a message from my servicing dealer announcing that my service was due. My Prado had been driven about 10Km home from the same dealer since the last service and placed on axle stands while I have been away so yesterday I drove back to the dealers to ask them if the service could be postponed as the vehicle had only covered 20Km.
I really don't know why I wasted my breath as I should have known what their answer would be. When questioned as to why a service was necessary I was given the reason that "oils deteriorate"
I had heard this before so Toyota staff must be indoctrinated with this nonsense.
My wife has an Audi A3 which needs an oil change every 12,000 miles, it was two years old before it had reached this mileage and only then was the first service was due.
This reinforces my opinion that Toyota treat their customers with contempt.
I agree with you entirely. Full synthetic oils are used for this exact reason........ so they do not deteriorate like mineral oils. They are designed and formulated specifically to maintain their lubricating properties for the application, including sitting there in the sump for extended periods of time.

I work in oil & gas and we only change the full synthetic oil on our rotating machinery based on condition (i.e. contaminant levels, water absorption, TAN levels, etc.) and not based on set intervals or hours of use. This is mainly due to the extreme cost of fully synthetic oils and also we can't afford the equipment downtime. Seriously if the lubricating oil did really deteriorate then a drum of oil would be no good after 6 months. NO way. What difference does it make if the oil sits in a 44Gal drum or a Prado sump?

I used to own a Mazda and in 2014 they changed their minimum service interval to 10,000km or 12 months, whichever comes first. this was an increase form their standard 10k or 6 months. Still not great but better than 6 moths.

Guess we're lucky that they have capped price servicing to keep the costs down then! :P

          Hi,
Instead of starting a new thread I thought I'd hijack this one..
How many kms and time can you go past when the service is due?
Mine was due this week and just clicked over 30000kms but I know the next 6 months won't have many kms added so I'm trying to extend it just a bit.
          Cheers

I have no idea about kms but I would imagine not many, I have always changed oils in my machinery at the distance or hours run.
I think the capped service is due at every 10,000 km or six months. When I visited my service dealer I got them to put in writing when my next service was due, there is a three month time slot but just 40,000 kms mentioned. Presumably as my Prado had not covered even 20,000 kms I could have driven for anther 20,000kms in the three months slot and this would be regarded as OK by Toyota?
I have emailed the auto "expert" to find out his feelings about oil change intervals and he replied with the same story that oil should be changed every six months regardless of use. I then asked why Audi are happy to leave their cars servicing for longer and whether Toyota change the oil in a new vehicle after six months from the manufacture date if it has stood in a showroom. I received a nasty sounding reply stating that "he was an engineer and he wasn't going to argue with me" but no answers to the direct questions. I like conspiracy theories so this started me wondering if he is paid by car makers!

I have booked my 40,000 km service for next week, even though I have only done 20,000 km. Apparently they need the vehicle all morning as it is "a big one" according to the woman on the phone.
She told me that I will also be getting the update which will be done under the guarantee, when I asked if this was the GGG38 which changes the burn for the DPF she had no idea. Can you wonder that I am a grumpy old git with very little faith in my servicing dealer?
I will try to find out when I take the Prado in what the update involves, remember that it is a manual and does seem to reach temperatures that are hot enough for the the filter to regenerate properly. I am not suggesting that automatics don't but the fast tick-over during a burn is higher and this is when the highest DPF temperature is reached.
I have monitored and recorded the distance between regens and time/kms of the burn plus temperature of the DPF so I hope I will be able to see what difference this upgrade makes.

One advantage of Toyota is that they have plenty of dealers (in most areas). I found a big difference in attitude when seeking quotes on my new Prado. I am happy that my dealer seems to give me straight information for servicing and not (as much a I can tell) trying up up-sell or hide anything. They have been happy to discuss oil detail, DPF updates etc. in a sensible way. It might be worth 'shopping around'. I do think that a 6 month servicing interval is a bit much for light usage though.

Funny story! So I put my Prado in for a "capped price service" last month. Nothing funny about that I know, but I have a dash cam and it was recording for the entire service. I could hear and see everything they did. Even when one of the service technicians considered taking my car down to the local take way joint to grab some lunch. In short, there was 2 hrs of them basically doing nothing but lifting the bonnet, filling the engine with oil, wiping over a few different things and then giving it a quick pressure clean across the top when they were done. They also took it for a 300m test drive. Most of the recording was of them working on other cars and not mine. I assume they rotated the wheels but that's about it. What esle could we expect for $220 from Toyota?

At least they left it recording! With all the DPF issues and the squealing that's now pretty much intolerable (been into Toyota too many times) I was looking at selling mine. So I asked what it'd be worth while I looked over a Patrol (it was next door) and a LC200 Petrol. They took it for a test drive and went off at break-neck speed and around a corner. Thinking I had them - I found that they had disconnected the camera (the last words were - hey, look what you need to do here...) and off they went. Next time I have recording is of them coming in.

Complained, and the dealer did the whole huff and puff, but nothing was done. Simply won't buy my car there anymore. I give them another once to try and sort out the squealing and if it's not fixed I'll have to sell it.

But the point is - I think the DashCams are great - but pretty soon they're going to realise it and disconnect them...

This was also my experience here in WA. Having worked for Consumer Protection I knew that it would be tried on and gave them short shrift especially the extended warranty hard sell. The women dealing with me was about 22 and actually pouted when I would not do business with me. Sheeeeh!

My dash cam wires are very well hidden and the 12V connection is not obvious because it goes through one of those cup holder power outlets which has a few things plugged in. Also, it is a very small dash cam mounted right up under the rear view mirror. You can't see it from the driver's seat, so I guess they missed it. They must do the entire service with the reds turned on as the dash cam only works when power is supplied. I agree that dash cams are great.

It will be interesting when my next service is due as I have fitted a dash cam powered from my Chinese head unit. As above there are no wires showing, the camera straddles the rear view mirror and the "arms" each side of the mirror fixing are telescopic to reach the roof lining. It does have a couple of LEDs but they are so small that you need to stick your head right under it to see them. I usually have the mic off as otherwise it records the conversation in the car, definitely a bit "big brother-ish"

I would leave it ON, as you may hear some conversation that will surprise you about servicing techniques, or lack thereof.

leave the mic on until you have a phone call over the car's bluetooth that you don't want recorded. Then you turn it off!

Dropped my SS Ute in to Holden for a service today and they have a sign in the service reception area saying it is against workplace OHS laws to record an employee doing his job without his consent so all dash cams need to be disabled while the vehicle is in for a service. If you don’t disable it they will. That actually makes sense to me, we have a similar policy in regards phone calls being recorded at my work.
