  • Looking at buying a 120 for around 20k suggestions?

    Hi guys,

New to the forum! I used to have a little Suzuki Jimny a few years back, was an awesome 4wd, so much fun off-road, however traded up for a city life Honda Accord and severely missing those off-road trips

I plan on spending around 18-21k and looking at a 120 series. I would like a manual but been looking and all the manuals seem pretty beat up for the price, however lots of the autos seem like they have just had the daily drive to school and home lives, so leaning more toward auto now.
Anyway looking for suggestions, recommendations, manual/auto, how many kms is to many, not worried about fuel consumption with petrol vs diesel i don't drive too much anyway so not a massive factor, what year is too old.
Anything to help really haha, im also in perth FYI if that factors into the equation.

    pic of the old jimny

    Cheers,
    Cam

120, petrol auto. Look for a VX to get the traction and stability controls etc. It is available on GXL but may be hard to find but is worthwhile. If you can't get it a GXL will be fine and add a diff lock if you are into extremes stuff. Lower the km the better but 200 000 not a problem for a well maintained V6. Auto is better than the manual in most conditions unless you are a real manual tragic and you are more likely to find one. A school run GXL will be a good way to start.

Yeah seems the way to go, thoughts about the grande? I've heard some stories about the suspension being a pain, is the VX the sweet spot?

VX is the sweet spot. GXL with option pack is good too but rare as. Grande air bag suspension and sunroof isn't worth the hassle by now.
2007 GXL V6 - ARB Bullbar with LED lights, snorkel, extractors, 2 1/4" dual exhaust, K&N filter, dimpled/slotted rotors, headrest dvd players, Ebay Satnav/reverse camera, GME 3100TX, Tigerz11 Side awning on custom brackets with Maxtrax mounts, 300W Invertor, ARB Underbody protection, Lightbar and STZ 265/70 tyres.
Wish list in order I'll get them: Sliders, 2" lift, E-locker, Winch bar with winch.

yeah understandable, I assume the gxl with the dual zone aircon would be the one with the stabilty control etc? seems to be the only dertermining factor to tell the two apart.

No. Ours has Dual zone but still a std GXL. They had facelift in mid 2006 and the GXL got dual zone and rear AC, steering wheel stereo controls and a few other bits and pieces. Defo look for 2006/07 onwards. They went until 2009 where the 150 kicked in.

            Common faults for this are:
            Cracked dash
Rust under the rear door bottom seal
            Split CV boots
            Leaking radiator
Petrols are the most reliable of the 2 engine types but a well maintained Diesel is great. They just need a bit more love and attention (aka money).
Autos are the pick for most as you don't loose momentum during 4wding like a manual.

Look at the transfer case lever. If it has HNL, it has traction control.

I've had no issues with the sunroof and the airbag conversion is easy to do now.

VXs not to common in Perth for sale you will find a good GXL auto in that price range but you will have to give them a good once over, when I went hunting it surprised me the difference in condition at the same price of the GXLs and some of the best where in car yards not privately, the Grande’s however mostly where in good condition and have the safety and traction control gear of modern cars included and if you can get your head around the suspension (keep and renew TEMS and Airbags small lift for more ability or replace TEMS and airbags completely with 2” lift for hard core ability) you may pay a little more but you will will get more “modern” vehicle for your money, one thing I noticed was for second hand there was no difference in price of a Prado if they had Roo bar and extras so look for one that has the extras you want they will come up.

yeah for me im not too worried about the grande suspension, don't plan on doing any hardcore 4wding and can always get airbags for it if i end up towing.

great tip, what does the standard transfer lever show?
