  • New head unit arrived.

This new head unit arrived today: https://www.aliexpress.com/snapshot/...Id=32793942638
As promised here is some brief info about the unit and a couple of photos here: https://imgur.com/a/1uhL0

As I was told by a Chinese seller that it wouldn't work in a right hand drive car and the canbus was different I was apprehensive but keen (perhaps too keen) to give it a try.
It seems to fit without much trouble, if anyone has taken out the air vents above the head unit which have to be swapped then they will know that this can be a bit fiddly. There are seven clips which have to be held (at once) before the vents will come out. There probably is a special tool for this but I struggled with small screwdrivers and little wedges.
The wiring is plug and play although I have ended up with a socket left over! The Chinese head unit fits back into the slot just fine although I had to be careful to tuck the extra wires and canbus decoder in behind.
I had been worried about the hazard switch as it is on the left of the unit, obviously designed for left hand drive vehicles. Luckily the switch body is still the same and fits into the new unit but you do need to change the original button with the one supplied. The wire will only just reach as it is now on the "wrong" side.

The screen looks much bigger than the original making it easier to see for people like me with old eyes.
I have only had a chance to give it a very quick test, google maps works as does iGO which comes pre-loaded with a 2015 Q4 map which (I think) is the same as the Toyota version. I will be updating it.
Amazingly the rear camera works, I was worried about this having been told that Toyota use 6 volt cameras and most after-market units use 12. I haven't tested the voltage yet so I may get a nasty shock.

Now the things I need some help/advice with. As you can see from the pictures the unit is only bodged in at the moment as I am not sure where to put the microphone and GPS aerial so the wires just come out of the front and go up onto the dash at present.
There are many things to sort out yet but I thought I would post my progress so far in case anyone is thinking of ordering something similar.
The problems that I know about so far, are that there are no spoken directions when navigating with iGO and when I tried the phone by ringing my wife she could hear me but I couldn't hear her. The radio and button press beeps do work. My wife needs the car for the upcoming weekend and refuses to drive with wires poking out of the dash so I will revert to the original head unit temporarily again soon.

You don't have to release these individually, just pull hard and it comes loose. All the dash parts are secured this way.

Are we talking about the same thing? I mean the adjustable air vents above the head unit, they are held in by spring clips which are slanted for insertion but would not come out without breaking something if the clips were not pulled back first.

Maybe not. I can't remember the details of changing my facial, but it did not involve pulling out the air vents.

Yes I expect you thought I was talking about the clips that hold the whole unit into the dash. I can see exactly what you mean there as they do just pull in and out. My problem was with the clips fitted directly above the head unit which hold the air vents into the head unit surround. Four of them are easily visible just above the top of the head unit as are two others above the vents. However there is one mounted sideways compared to the others which isn't so easy to see. It is no big deal once you know where they all are but was a worry for me not wishing to break or bend anything pulling too hard in my ignorance.
I am still hoping for some feedback on where to place the GPS antenna and the microphone, I don't know where the original car mic is or why it cant be used with the after-market unit.
The other little problems like the phone muted and spoken iGO directions were caused by my phone (galaxy s6) bluetooth settings and a setting in the iGO program.
Another thing I haven't mentioned is that the steering wheel buttons seem to work without any input from me, but one thing I have noticed is that if the driver's door is left open the on screen map shows the wrong side. I guess this is because it is designed for left hooker cars.
To answer Shonky I ordered it while still in the UK and it was £300 which is not too much more than a Toyota map update.

When I installed the Parrot Asteroid on our 120, I installed the GPS receiver centred on the dash next to the windscreen. Managed to get the cable up through the demister vents with little problem. That GPS receiver works fine there.

Same with mine. Microphone was run up pillar and along head lining to near mirror.

                    John,

I put the gps antenna in behind the radio, just underneath the dash, if you look nn there with the radio removed there is a spot that it will fit right up close to the window, so far no issue with signal and no movement that i am aware of.

The remote mic I just put on top of the steering column, so it is close to the driver.

Thanks to all of you for the help. I hadn't thought of trying to get a wire through the air vent but I had wondered if it was worth trying the GPS antenna under the dash. I will give both ideas a go.
Now for the good news, at least it is good news for me as it will stop 2 years of my moaning about maps.
I contacted the seller who is keen for some feedback to ask what was the easiest way to update the map. They replied that "they would have to ask their engineer" then email me the maps. I suppose this was better than nothing but undeterred I decided to download the latest I could find then copy them to iGO using the built in file browser from a USB stick.
This worked fine and now I have 2017 Q2 maps showing parts of my estate that were non existent on the previous version and of course ALL Toyota vehicles with factory navigation.

A quick update, I tried the gps antenna under the dash and although it did work the unit occasionally reported "lost gps signal" so I took it all out again and threaded the wires for both the gps and the mic under the dash to the offside where the speaker grill didn't fit too well and there was enough room for the wires to come out close to the windscreen. I mounted the gps antenna in the middle of the dash as close to the screen as possible and above the dash mat.
I took the S/N ratio of the satellite reception before and after and with the aerial under the dash the strongest reading was 39 and the weakest 15. Placing it above the dash resulted in figures of 50 and 30 so quite a difference.

It looks like the software is copied from an other well known Chinese brand as using their password I was able to access the factory settings menu. Here it was easy to swap the door open symbol to the correct side.
I have tried Torque pro and put Firefox browser on, it does look as though you can do most things that you can do with any android device, so at the moment I am quite pleased with it although the screen is a bit reflective.
I will see how it goes, hopefully it wont blow up just yet. I have uploaded some more pictures to another photo hosting site here: https://postimg.org/gallery/1pkdo69s6/

OK I am happy to help if I can or with anything else you need to know about the unit. I was going to send you a private message about my progress but are they still disabled on the forum or is it just me not knowing how to send one?
You are welcome to have a look at my unit before you order one if we are not too far apart.
