  • Help Stuck in Port Headland. Endine cranks, starts for a few seconds then splutters and stops/

Engine cranks over but wont start

Coming into port Headland from Broome and about 15ks out the engine began to loose power and then started to surge and just stopped. Filled up in Broome and was down to last half of second tank. Up to this was running well.
while waiting for tow truck tried to start it and it cranks over but wont start.
Got towed into caravan park in Headland/ after a while tried to start it again after checking for error code with Turque, only came up with a unknown body fault. Well it started but only for a few second then started surging and spluttered to a stop. Now just cranks over.

Any ideas what it could be or recomend a good mechanic in port headland.

    Thanks
    Wayne

    Fuel filter clogged?

    Fuel pump faulty?

Fuel related issue? Fuse? Fuel pump? Tap the fuel tanks to see if the rear tank is full but the front tank is empty.

        Thanks Amts and drwormy.

Fuel is what I'm suspecting. Bit hard to really check but by tapping through holes in tank guards theydo both seem empty.
Gauge shows Half tank left on reserve. Fuel usage has seemed normal 20l/100ks or 400ks per tank and have been below existing shown level on arriving in broome from hedland. does fuel pump make enough noise to hear if it is running.

Might be way off here but.....,

years ago I had a holden rodeo that we did some work on and missed an earth wire when re-assembling things and had same sort of issue.

May well be something electrical related which could be a real pain to track down.

Can you follow the fuel pipe up in to the engine bay

Disconnect it and see if fuel flows when ignition turned on by someone else

sounds very much like clogged filter (between tanks) or maybe veturi valve in rear tank. It looks like an octopus with a bunch of hoses coming off it on the very top of the rear tank. Easiest way to check that is to try and fill the tanks full and if it froths and gurgles and takes forever to fill then the rear tank is full and the main (under passenger) is empty. Check to see if fuel is being pumped through the hose to your under bonnet filter first. If not then try the filter between the two tanks first.

There isn't a between tank filter in the V6.

Well we are now in Newman on way to Perth ever so carefully. Rang my mechanic in Perth, thanks to Simon fron Vehicool in Canning Vale, plug well deserved.
Turns out hes seen it before and its to do with the tubes in the venturi pump that transfers the fuel fron 2nd tank to main for it to be pumped to engine.
Once the level in the tank dot below the cracked hoses in 2nd tank it stated to draw air hence the symptom of no fuel but gauge shows 1/2 tank left.
He suggested putting a jerry can of fuel in to confirm that level was below split hose. Did this and away she went. Only thing we have to watch out now is we don't start using 2nd tank so it will be a trip of many fuel stops. Have now noticed that pressure seems to build up in filler pipe but with carefull opening I don't think it will be a problem.
He estimates between 600 and 800 to fix it once we are back in Perth.
I think it may have been caused by the 200 Km of rough dirt road we travelled the previous day on way to Cape Leveque from Broome.

On another note not too impressed with the RAC (our version of NRMA), OK towies were great in getting us into Hedland but that was as far as it went. We were dropped of at a caravan park and told to ring in morning when we sorted out who we wanted to fix car and they would tow us there. They dont have a mechanic in major centres to Diogenes any faults and offer advice.

venturi was about $330 or so when i had to replace mine a few years ago. Pretty simple, drain rear tank (if you can), unbolt and lower it and then disconnect all the hoses and take the venturi out and put new one in and reconnect everything.
