  • Buying first 120 please help

    Hi guys first post....

    I have placed a deposit (subject to my mechanics inspection) on a 2006, 4.0L, 5 speed, V6 Petrol Grande, Auto, GRJ120R, 260,00kms.

It's being sold by a Toyota main dealer in Adelaide. The asking price is $20k.
it has Full-service history, drives nice and I was lucky enough to meet the previous owners when they traded it in.

Now I've been after one for a while, and so posted a question on a Prado owner's "FaceBook page" regarding the asking price.

Nearly all the comments (mostly from interstate) stated that I was being "ripped off" and that it is "way overpriced"!

Some are saying that if im paying over $15k then im paying over the odds and for $20k I could get a much later model D4D with lower kms.

So I wanted to ask the same question on Pradopoint, I've checked "Redbook" which shows the following:

    *Private Price Guide $19,100 - $22,200
    *Dealer Price Guide $20,950 - $24,300
    *Trade In Price Guide $15,000 - $18,100
    *Average Km 165,000 - 275,000

Obviously, I do not want to pay over the odds and get ripped off, but to me, the price seems about right. I just wondered what you guys thought?

    Thanks in advance.

Well, it's done average to below average kms.
    The engine will last forever,
The "full service history" indicates the previous owner(s) were fairly careful with the car,
It is a fairly late model, so most of the design/build gremlins were ironed out by Toyota.

So, assuming there's no damage, hasn't towed the Queen Mary around Australia, has clean carpets and only a few stone chips, I'd personally say that's probably about right.

Thanks for the reply, its got the tan/light leather, Which is quite dirty as are the carpets, Toyota are having the car detailed and leather and carpets cleaned. I'll just have to wait and see how well it comes up. Fingers crossed.

2 years i ago i bought (in Adelaide - our car prices are always a bit higher than eastern states)
dec 2005 VX-petrol-5 speed- Sovereign bar 173,000ks for 20k dollars. from a smaller dealer, not a big main one..

mine also had impeccable records. so yours has done a few more k's but if you love it, it's worth it to you.

I'm very happy with mine, but have spent a bit putting gear onto it. so bear in mind what you'll want to spend to get it where you need it.

something is only worth what someone will pay.

That's a very similar vehicle to mine with similar kms, and pretty close to what my insurance company says its worth. So that price seems perfectly reasonable to me.

Thanks very much for the reply, certainly puts my mind at rest. Now just got to hope that it passes the mechanical inspection.

speaking from NSW here, I've been looking online for a prado for a year (haven't got to the point where I can buy one yet, so just watching market and learning stuff on here), but those conditions you mentioned seem to be averaging advertised price of $15,000 - $25,000. Most are on the lower end. The ones with less than 200,000 are usually 18-19 and the ones over are usually 15-18.

That is all private though, so dealers would add another $2000-4000, so I'd say the price is right from a dealer.

Also note that I have only looked at three so I could make up my mind what I wanted, so it's possible that the cheaper ones are in bad condition, although the photos seem to suggest they are in good condition.

I feel bloody happy as now, I picked up a 2004 Grande last week for $12.5k, private sale, was asking $15k but I got it down 😂. All electrics work and factory bull bar, no tow ball fitted so never pulled a thing. Full service history with Toyota, book all filled and stamped, I’ve put it in today for it’s 200k service so at least I’ll know if there’s any concerns b4 I go up the beach. The only issue was some minor dash cracks which a lot of them seem to have, $40 dash mat has covered them all. Plus it has 6months rego left. Leaves me with some spare cash to run dual battery, draws and fridge, plus fit a tow ball.

To give you an idea mate, I just sold my 03 Petrol Grande with 241,000km for $15k in above average condition with ARB bullbar and UHF. Not bad considering I paid $16k for it 4 years ago

So $20k from a dealer sounds about right.
