  • LED indicator fog light install with GXL switch

Just thought I'd do a write up on installing the GXL combination switch into 150 Prado, models without the fog light switch, along with correcting LED indicators in the bullbar.

(Quick disclaimer: This post is intended only as a reference I am not a professional and therefore have no idea what I am doing, if you undertake this procedure using this post do so at your own risk)

    First some brief background info.
I installed a TJM bullbar with the fog lights and LED park/indicator lights a few months ago onto my 150 GX. Long story short the indicators flashed too fast due to less resistance of the LED's and I didn't want to rewire the fog lights with the supplied TJM harness considering there's already one in the GX Prado from factory.

    Solution to the indicators
There is the possibility to do this without wiring in resistors. A mate has a GX Prado that came originally with no bullbar and no indicators already in the bumper so when his LED indicators where wired in when he got the same TJM bar fitted they were wired up to the existing Prado loom and no changes needed to be made for them flash normally.

After a few visits to the local Toyota dealer I was no better informed of there being any differences in relays between models so gave up and decided to put resistors in. (Maybe a TJM or ARB fitter could inform us oh how its done when they wire up the bullbar indicators???)

Very simple to install basically just mounted the resistor on the body of the car behind the bull bar (rivets are a better way of securing them, I didn't have any at the time) and splice one end to the earth wire of the LED indicator (the white wire) and the other end to the positive of the LED indicator (yellow or green wire depending on setup). Below are pictures of it installed and the product I used.
Resistors cost me $30 for the pair form autopro.

Fog light combination switch and fog lights
I purchased the fog light combination switch from a wreckers for about $150 as apposed to the $380 from my dealer and them not knowing if it was the correct part I was after.
To install the switch you have to remove the airbag, steering wheel, clock spring, and wiper/indicator stork together.

Start by making sure your steering is pointed straight, disconnect the battery and turn the headlights, horn, indicators etc (the more you do the safer you feel haha) on and off to ensure any residual charge is removed. Remove the two plastic tabs on the sides of the steering wheel using a small flat head screw driver or pick (one around the cruise control stork the other on the opposite side).

In behind these plastic tabs you will see two T30 hex/security screws. Undo both of them (the screws remain captive in the steering wheel).

Once these are undone you can ease the airbag away from the steering wheel and disconnect the two connectors from the airbag (Again make sure all power is disconneted from the vehicle). To do this use a pick to lift the yellow centre plastic up from the rest of the plug and then lift the plug away form the airbag detonator.
Image shows orange connector with yellow piece raised and black connector still down.

There's no need for additional resistors if the built in indicators have not been modified. If the built in ones were halogen but swapped out to LEDs, then resistors are required. Adding LED indicators onto bullbars do not affect the rest of the circuitry if the built in bulbs weren't changed.

Disconnect the horn and cruise control plugs

Crack the main steering wheel nut (19mm from memory) and loosen it a few turns. Then use a steering wheel puller (use two threaded holes either side of the main nut) to pop it away from the spline, undo the nut all the way and remove the steering wheel completely

With the steering wheel removed avoid spinning the clock spring around (I marked a position at the top of the clock spring so if it did move I could line it back up). Remove the 2 screws on the face of the steering wheel shroud and unclip the the two pieces away from each other then remove them away from the steering column (Helps if the adjustment lever is down).

Remove the yellow/wiring clip from the bottom of the clock spring by pressing in the middle tab with a pick or small flat head screw driver.

Then unclip the three tabs around the clock spring to remove it (one on the left side, one at the top, and one on the right).

Once the clock spring is removed unplug all the wires going to the indicator and wiper storks, then using pliers or multi grips slide the clamp away from around the wiper and indicator combination switch (can be a little fiddly but you want it of the black plastic completely and slid onto the steering column).

Once the spring clamp is off the combination switches its just a matter of gently pulling them away from the steering column (It all comes away as one piece)

NOTE: To re-install combination switches I found it easy to do with the spring clip already on the switches first and sliding it all over the steering column together.

        STILL MORE TO COME

To separate the the wiper switch away from the indicators there is one tab that needs to be pressed in, then you just slide the wiper stalk straight off.

Clip your new indicator combination switch onto your wiper switch then install everything back in the reverse order.

To make your fog lights work you need to put a 15 amp fuse into its allocated position (the fuse box just above the drivers side kick panel). I have heard of people saying you need a relay however mine worked without one and the missing fog relay in the engine bay compartment, as far as I am aware, is for the red fog lights in the rear bumper.

The plug for the fog lights is located near where the fog lights would be positioned, secured back with a piece of tape on the body of the car. It has white and white with a black stripe wires going to it. The plug is the one pictured below. I cut the plug off and soldered the supplied plug from the TJM kit.

The final result was fully functional indicators and fog lights using the factory fog light wiring, having the fog indicator dash lamp work when turned on and saving switch panel space for other goodies later on.

Did you look to see if the indicator switch arm would unscrew and disconnect from the whole blinker/ wiper stalk assembly. I ask this as when doing the same to my previous 120 GX like you I got the assembly from wreckers, then separated the light stalk from the rest of the unit and was able to just remove and replace the light stalk without need for steering wheel etc.
I would assume it would be not much difference in the 150 to 120
New 2015 150s GX 5 seater with floor mats, towbar and a big wish list
Previously a 2004 120s 1KZ GX silver manual with stuff
before that a 1996 RV6 90S with lots of gear

It is possible to swap around just the stalk but all the screws are on the back of the mechanism so there is little to no room to get to them while it is still on the steering shaft, also to even get to that stage to even get a glimpse of the screws you still need to remove the steering wheel anyway.

So was much easier just sliding the whole lot off once you have the spring clamp out of the way.

I know it's been a while since this was posted, but do you know what factory wiring you connected the indicators to?
