  • Tyre experience with Scorpion ATR?

    Hi all,
just bought my first prado (2010 150 GLX) and looking to upgrade the rubber to an AT, my mechanic has recommended Pirelli Scorpion ATR (265/70/17) which have good reviews online but I thought I would put it out here to see if any other prado users have had good or bad experiences?

It will be our daily drive so 90% on the road and then I hope to do some beach work around Fraser & Rainbow beach etc and find some other dirt tracks around for a bit of fun.
Also looking at getting a 2" lift if that makes any difference to tyre choices.

Happy to hear others recommendations on other tyres too for similar use - thanks!

Very good option for the type of driving you are planning. My dad had them on his Amarok on a Simpson crossing and they were great. Cooper AT/3 and Bridgestone 693 or 697 are also good options.

Legend thanks Bob, I had read lots of feedback on the 697s as being very popular too.

Any opinion on sizes 265/65/17 vs 265/70/17? I note there's a reasonable price difference between the 2 sizes in the 697's, my quote below:

        Tyres 265/65/17 A/T
        Comforser CF1000 $129
        Monsta Terrain Gripper $184
        Hankook RF10 $210
        Bridgestone Dueler 697 $211
        Nitto Terra Grappler G2 $224
        Toyo Open Country A/T $245

        Tyres 265/70/17 A/T
        Comforser CF1000 $144
        Monsta Terrain Gripper $200
Pirelli Scorpion $229 (Road Based A/T Great for road/sand, still good off road. This tyre
would be my pick for your needs, great reviews and excellent value for money)
        Hankook RF10 $244
        Yokohama Geolander $250
        Bridgestone Dueler 697 $298

Again, given the requirements, 265/65 would be better. The only advantage of 265/70 is 13mm of extra ground clearance, which is great for deep mud and rocks, but not required for the beach. Disadvantage is fuel economy, power, speedo accuracy and price...

FWIW: Early this week I put Toyo Open Country ATII 265/65 on my 2015 GXL and a 2 inch Tuff Dog lift kit. So far so good.

I'm running the Pirelli Scorpion ATR's (as mentioned here http://www.pradopoint.com.au/showthr...l=1#post573005) and i'm extremely impressed with them. I've had them on all terrain types including snow, mud, rocks, sand etc and they have performed better than expected. If you search the forum you will find a lot of positive reviews about this tyre.

I had the 697's on my last Prado, and while they are a great tyre too but i prefer the Scorpions. The Duelers were frequently picking up rocks due to the more aggressive tread pattern and tossing them out at speed (bouncing rocks off the boat), and were slightly noisier. I dont get this problem with the Scorpion, and they still have tons of grip.

Same here had them on when we bought the car, good on the road and just did Fraser 18psi front 20 rear, no punctures over exposed roots etc on inlnand tracks and didnt get bogged anywhere from Inskip to Sandy Cape Lighthouse. Having said that I'd probably go with BFG's ATR or something next time for a change and keep pressures up in the front ones as they wear pretty badly on the outer edges driving around town.

I've got Scorpion ATRs (currently on my Xtrail) they've been ok and I say this lightly.. but I noticed the other day when it was raining quite hard i was sliding a lot in roundabouts and committing to tight turns. It's really scary when it happens. Although it appears others as above have had great luck with them, maybe performing better on a Prado.

Does anyone know what the mud terrain version is like?
