  • 1kz-te engine light probs.

    Gents,
I recently had a rebuild on the old girl, new head, rings & bearings, clutch etc, etc. Yesterday, on the way up to the mechanics to have an oil leak repaired under warranty the Prado brought up an orange engine light and lost all power but was still running. I pulled over & shut her down but couldn't find anything out of the ordinary. Fired her up again with no engine light lit and drove to the mechanics, another 30 kms away with no issues.
Mechanic now can't get her to start and the engine fault light's up again and will not clear. Apparently the code indicates a faulty throttle body position?
Anyone seen this before? Got a suggestion? Maybe just a faulty throttle position sensor or does he need to replace the whole throttle body?
The mechanic's trying to source a used throttle body assembly but apparently they're not that common. He's talking about pricing a new one from Toyota!! That got me frightened...... $$$$
Any help would be greatly received. I need her back on the road.
    Cheers, Smokey.

Exactly what code did it throw, ie the two digit code? 15 perhaps? There is a diagnostic trouble code chart that gives suggested areas to look at.
    cheers

I don't know the exact code Steve, only that it suggested a throttle position error.

It's a bit hard to do remote diagnosis but all I can offer is to diagnose carefully before throwing any parts at it. Connectors would have been disturbed to lift the head, so I would be looking carefully at connectors, earths, etc. Pull and reseat all connectors and look for bent/broken pins etc. Strange that it ran then stopped....
Fault code 15 seems to have the most to do with throttle position.

All electrical connectors have been inspected and spray lubed. Throttle drive was removed & a known working spare fitted with no improvement.
Engine fault light is up immediately on startup and engine goes into 'limp' mode but resets when the engine is shut off, with either throttle drives fitted.
          Fault code is P122.
The Prado is off to a specialist auto electrician to diagnose tomorrow.
Still happy for your thoughts or opinions.

How many ks on it? What is the wiring condition like? When the motor come out where was the wiring disconnected from?

It's got nearly 440000 on the clock but about 2000 since the rebuild. The whole vehicle is in good nick considering the km on it, no beach work or mud running and well cared for. Dunno about the wiring, had no issues prior to the engine rebuild, but it's fair to assume a bunch of stuff was unplugged and wrenched about in getting the motor out. I suspect there's a dodgy plug connection as a result. Getting a bit pissed off now. It's been out of action 10 days, spoke with the mechanic yesterday who said the auto electricians won't get to look at it till Monday at the earliest, that'll be 14 days. I'm a sparky myself..... could have had it back on the road by now......

I would hazard a guess that there a wire cracked somewhere, that many ks the wiring can get quite tired,
Is it manual? I have a spare 1kz manual wiring engine harness here it was low ks

                    Yes Scott it's a manual.
I'm working on the theory that the wiring's been baked in one position for 17 years and when the engine came out the wiring loom has been twisted where it didn't want to be. We see this a lot at work.
Anyway, how much for your loom if I need it?

That is exactly what i was getting at, 100$ posted , I will confirm it is in good nic still, it was left over from a conversion hasn't been in a car close to 10 years

Cheers mate, thanks for that. I'll be in contact if all else fails.
They found two damaged wires in the loom to the throttle drive as well as incorrect (low) resistance readings on the throttle drive stepper motor.
Two new wires have been run externally and they're trying to source a new throttle drive.

Throttle drive replaced but engine light still lit.
Further checks proved the ECU output to the throttle drive fried, one ECU ordered.
Next update will be the the real damage...... to my wallet.

                            Used ECU dead on arrival.
The original ECU was sent off for repair along with a bunch of other components which needed to be coded the same apparently, immobiliser etc.
Long story short..... the Prado lives.
So what did it cost? I don't want to talk about it....... let's just say I spent more in repairs in 3 months than I paid for the car.
Moral of the story......... Don't buy a car with high kilometers unless you're happy to spend an equal amount in repairs.
