  • Fitting a 2-ch dashcam to a 150 Prado Kakadu

A while back I purchased a Blackvue model DR650S-2CH and Power Magic Pro to install into my Kakadu but have been a little bit daunted at the prospect of having to pull roof lining and pillar or sill covers apart to fit it myself. What is required to install it wired up to my auxiliary battery? I have the factory rear seat DVD player hanging off the roof lining so wasn't sure if the cable for the rear camera could be routed through the roof lining or not.

I'm happy to give it a go if it's not too hard, have pulled the dash apart numerous times for UHF installs, etc so it's not entirely foreign to me.

After a couple of decades of doing it myself, and like you pulling the thing apart for the UHF install and losing a 6-pack in the process, I found my Blackvue install was much quicker and more professionally done by spending $110 and getting an auto electrician to do it. In fact, I'm converted - pretty much anything now and I will take it to them (but they're in Canberra). No more lights, UHFs, Air Compressors to be wired up by this little black duck!

I do know that behind the right hand panel of the dash (around where the parking distance beeping thing button is) he installed another accessory socket/ cigarette lighter and plugged it into there. Then ran the wires up the side and in the top portion of the roof lining where the windscreen meets it. It's almost exactly what I had before (except I had an extended cord that ran all the way to the actually socket behind the hand brake, which was a pain.

The last auto electrician I let near my Prado did a bit of a butcher job, makes it hard to trust another one again.

Yes it was. It was their hourly rate - $100 plus GST. They said it'd be an hour and a half for a twin install (so $165). I was looking at them on the internet, when an engineering mate suggested them in conversation at work. That had me sold, but when I was in at Toyota telling them I was getting one (just chewing the fat) they also suggested the same mob - so that was it for me. Their Fyshwick/ Canberra.

Any tips or suggestions as to how to route the cable to the rear camera for the dual dashcam setup?
            .... also on a 150 Prado

I installed a Blackvue DR-650 dual cam in my 150.
Located power in the roof from the cabin lights sockets which saves having to try and run seperate power from the fuse panel under the dash.
Ran the rear camera lead straight down the middle of the roof (no good if you have a sun roof) and routed it down the rear right hand side and through the existing loom onto the tail door.
Was simple to route the cable through the door up to the top where the camera sits neatly beside the wiper.
Because of where i got power the camera remains powered up for about 20 minutes after the car is locked due to system power remaining to interior light switches otherwise no issues at all.
You should be able to find info on removing the roof rear lining edge on-line and just be careful when feeding the cable through the roof lining as there is some loose insulation (like acrylic pillow filling) that you have to push through. I used a length of yellow-tongue flooring strip which I fed from the back and then taped the cable to it when it got to the front. Easiest way I found.
If you position the camera just left of centre at the top of the window it will have clean glass to look through.
Setup is almost invisible behind the mirror and no cables dangling anywhere. Took about 2 hours to do all up.
Works well as a rear view camera with my phone setup in a cradle on the dash.
I can try and locate the wiring diagram if you like.

Guys was anyone able to locate an ACC wire in the roof? I have located two red wires at the roof light plug but both appear to be permanently live.

In the roof console there is power and ground available. The power looks permanent but switches off 20 minutes after the car is locked. See attached axtract from wiring schematic for details. This is what i used to power my DR650-2ch camera. As the current used by the camera is low i didn't have to worry about burning out wiring. I simply spliced into the power and ground wires on pins 21 (RED power) and 15 (WHITE-BLUE ground). Make sure you properly insulate the power connection splice. Has been working for nearly 2 years without a hitch.

Sederp, I have the sun roof on mine and I'm struggling to find information online about how to remove the overhead lights/console. Any tips?
