  • TJM DC/SOlar Battery Charger

    Looking at getting this installed: http://www.tjm.com.au/en-oceania/pro...tion=node/4458

    Does anyone have any recommendations on this system? Getting the dual battery set up to run a fridge mostly and maybe a light or two. Cheers

        I understand the TJM charger is made by Projecta, what I want to know is whether or not it is a good system? I'm looking at getting the full duel battery set up installed by TJM and would like to know if this is a good set up for a 150 for using a fridge and the odd light on camping trips?

          So in a nutshell it will do the job fine. Useful if you are planning to add solar in the future as it removes the need for a further solar regulator.
          The problem that it assists with (And I'm prepared to have my head bitten off for it) is the temperature sensing alternator that the prado has. Plenty of chat about it regarding charging of batteries and everything but in short as the temperature goes up the ECU (Or some other computer somewhere or something) the voltage output of the alternator decreases.
          In mine on a 15 degree day with the engine warmed I'd be getting may 13.9 volts out of my alternator. As the temperature rises to say a 32 degree day it would drop to 13.2 volts or so.
          My dual battery system has a Redarc SBI12 solenoid with a Alternator Output Compensator made by Piranha which boosts the voltage output by 0.5 volts or so.
          That system does the job for what I need it to do as I don't run solar and use the second battery maybe 20-30 times a year to run stuff with the car off.

          So in the end for what you are describing as your use the ICD25 will work well. If price is a factor the $379 for the TJM branded one vs $120 for a Redarc SBI12 is something to consider.

            Ok thanks that makes sense. I've got a quote to get the TJM DC/Solar battery charger and everything else (battery tray, battery, wiring, double 12v plug in rear etc.) fitted for $1,290.

            Does sound like a bit but I don't have the knowledge to fit it myself and would like the warranty (I think you get with TJM installs).

                I forget the brand but I know it is 100ah. Any brand I should look out for in particular?

                  Where is the battery going? Tight to get a 100AH under the bonnet and if it is an AGM better in the cabin. What size are the cables they are running to the outlet. Get a few more bits of info.

                    Next question is having this Projecta IDC25 charger installed, I am looking at getting a small solar panel to top up the battery from running the fridge when I dont plan on driving for a few days.

                    As the Projecta IDC25 acts as a regulator I need to get a solar panel that does not have a regulator as the two would cancel each other out, does anyone know of any portable solar panels without a regulator? I can't find any!

                      Ditto for my Redarc. In my limited sample space (of one), the regulator is velcroed to the back of the panels. You can see the wires run from the panel output to the regulator input. You can cut them, put some connectors on them (with matching connectors to your lead to the Projecta) and then plug-n-play. Use the panel regulator if you ever want to charge up something not connected to your Projecta, and bypass it when you want to use the Projecta.

                        I use the solar controller built into the BCDC in the Prado and camper but I kept the low rent unit from the solar panel and fitted Anderson plugs to it so I can charge other batteries directly when we are camping.
