  • Desert fuel consumption in 2.8

As the touring season is over, I am after some real world fuel consumption figures for the 2.8. I am particularly after loaded desert figures- CSR, Simpson, Googs etc. I am planning a long desert trip in 2018 where I will need 1400-1500 km range.. I know what my old V6 auto got but this is a new ball game. Thanks.

111 lookers and no drivers? Has no one yet done a desert trip in a heavily laden 2.8? How about the same in a D4D auto 150 then to give me a ball park figure.

We used around 16L/100 from Mt Dare to Birdsville, but we went via WAA and Knolls. 4 Pax, full roof rack, 60L water, fridge... and only one climb up Big Red.

            Hi
If you need 1500 range and work on average of 20 litres per hundred that’s 300 lts ... then add on 20% for a safety margin that’s a lot to carry.

Maybe put up a rough itinerary and people could offer some alternative that could incorporate fuel supplies or a drop maybe.

All part of the planning process but that’s half the fun.

            Cheers
            Mike

The trip is closer to 1400 and planning for 1500. No chance for fuel drop. Last fuel Innaminka then Jervois on the Plenty Hwy. Walkers Crossing, southern Simpson, French line, Colsen Track, Madigans line and Hay River. I have carried 300 l before on CSR in a V6 auto. I am thinking 270 l. because about 200+km will be normal outback roads. Easy to carry 6 jerrycans. Remove seats [save 70kg] and ratchet strap them down to the floor under where the seats were using brackets mounted to the floor sear belt mounts. Fridge and 2-3 jerries of water will fit here too. Nice and low and in the centre of the car. It also provides a nice flat area for tables ,chairs etc and soft stuff to be lashed down. Everything else behind cargo barrier in and on home made shelves there. Not much on roof- spare, maxtrac, shovel and awning. See photos on my CSR report in 2010 to get the idea. The planning is critical and underway.
