  • will roof rack + roof top tent affect the roll over angle of the car

    Hey All,

have a noob question . I'm thinking of adding a roof rack (flat) and eventually a rooftop tent into my Prado. When I calculated the weight will be roughly 100-120 Kgs including the roof rack (I'm gussing around 50 kgs) + roof top tent around (55-60 Kgs).

Given that , we are adding this much of weight to the top, I'm wondering will this affect to the roll over angle of the car. I'm currently running on 50mm lift and standard size (29") BFG KO2 A/T's.

I understand it will not be the same as factory stock, but should this be something I need to taken in to account when going for a roof-top-tent option.

    thanks in advance,

    cheers

    Sam

The roof capacity is 100kg. This I assume has taken roll over dynamics into account.

If you are only carrying the roof top tent, I would go for a minimalist roof rack, such as the 3-bar heavy duty rack (Toyota rebadged from Rhinorack) sold by Toyota dealers. Try and avoid 4wdsupacentre steel flat racks as they are heavy. There is a lot of steel under the RTT that gets unused assuming that the rack is only for the RTT and side mounted accessories (shovel, awning, Maxtrax carrier).

Simple physics would say yes, it will affect your roll over angle of the car, as well as it's handling. The 100Kg load is a dynamic load (so you can put more on when it's static, how much is anyones guess by what I can find) and that 100Kg is important not to over-do as firstly, the ESC would have been tested to cope with that load (100kg on the roof) and secondly, if you overload it then you're driving uninsured/ unregistered.

Consider a Rhino Back bone system to lower the hight a little and add a bit of flexibility. The whole set up from memory weights 27Kg's for the 2138mm version that I have.

Roof top tents are a PITA to install and remove with the backbone or similar. You just cant get your hands underneath to access the nuts/bolts. Having said that, I actually want to swap my ARB alu cage rack for a Rhino backbone with platform (but I won't be running a RTT)

The backbones actually add more weight (if that is a concern)

Hey all, Thanks for all the answers. I think I'll go with a Rhino rack for now and will give a long and hard think about having a rooftop tent. From What I can gather, rooftop tent creates more problems than it solves.

            Thanks again

            cheers,

            Sam

RTT's are obviously a great solution when camping. Sam was just asking about the roll over angle and we spoke about mounting RTT's with the rhino rack backbone system which is crazy hard and time consuming.

Loving that set up mate, congrats !

What kind of dollars and place to buy what you have on your roof ? (RTT/racks/awning)
Did you notice anything of importance when all that went onto your roof ( handling wise )

Sorry to necro this thread but that looks great! Out of interest what roof rack are you using under the rtt?

Look like the Rhinorack Vortex bars

They are available cheaper from a Toyota dealer.

Thanks for the link. Our prado has roof rails so I’d need the two bar roof rack http://www.rhinorack.com.au/products...of-rack_ja9141 - do you think 3 bars is necessary for an rtt for the additional support?

The RTT is not that long to span 3 bars. The reason why you would fit 3 bars is because of limiting the overhang of a 2.5m awning.
