  • Another new head unit

Following on from JohnLynn's posts I purchased and installed this unit with the DAB+ antenna and the OBDII scanner:
    https://www.aliexpress.com/item/Car-...311.0.0.8kV4aW
    https://www.aliexpress.com/item/Exte...311.0.0.8kV4aW
    https://www.aliexpress.com/item/Hota...311.0.0.8kV4aW
Installation was pretty straightforward. I followed these instructions on removing the existing head unit:
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ydLhwJf7mFc
And then matched up the connectors to the wiring loom supplied. All up approx 3 hours, but to do it again probably half that time. I ran the GPS and microphone up the side of the drivers pillar and was able to get reception from inside my garage. I ran the antenna for the DAB+ up the passengers side pillar and stuck it to the top left corner of the windscreen. It was great to see all the DAB+ channels propagate the app. Still a learning curve on the system.
The total cost was $524.57 and delivery took less than a week. I have been is contact with the seller about updated maps and the password to access the CANBUS system (change door indicator over) and they have been very helpful. I cannot locate the SD Card slot (have my doubts there is one) but easy enough to update the maps through the Android system.
Reverse camera, steering wheel integration, USB slots (had a 64GB USB card plugged into the USB slot next to the hand brake and it picked that up with all my music on it) all worked first time.
All in all, I am well pleased with the system and am looking forward to installing either Hemma or Oziexplorer, Wikicamps and whatever takes my fancy onto the Android system.

Well done, glad you have it working. I wouldn't worry about waiting for the seller to give you a link to a new map as the iGO 2017 Q2 can be downloaded with all the trimmings from a few GPS forums. I simply put the files on a usb stick and used the built in file explorer app to copy/paste into the iGO content folder. Also the included maps app gives you access to google maps provided you have a phone signal (I use mobile hotspot) or have downloaded the maps previously.

HI there, i'm interested in one of these units. How do you find the Bluetooth pairing on your phone and voice call quality.

Probably the only thing stopping me from upgrading my stock GXL unit.

Can you have two apps open at once, such as Spotify and google maps?

How is the sound quality, thus is my first priority and then navigation. It’d be nice to have video playback etc too and this looks pretty good for the price.

Did the steering wheel controls etc just connect through the canbus connection?

Interested to hear your review now you’ve had it in for a couple of days.

Bluetooth pairing is OK on my unit, pressing the phone button on the steering wheel brings up a screen with keypad and contacts and I can easily hear callers and they say they can hear me without any problems.
The unit must pair with two BT devices at once as I have a BT ELM327 plugged in to the OBD port and torque pro runs OK.
The factory head unit from memory (which isn't very good) used to announce emails and texts over BT but these Chinese units have the standard android email app which needs wifi to work so I use my phone (another android Galaxy S6) set as a mobile hotspot.
I don't know if this is the correct method for connecting a phone to the head unit as of course a usb lead could be used as well, mirroring the phone if needed but I find this unnecessary..
I haven't ever used Spotify but I think that apps will run exactly the same as they normally do on any android device.
Sound quality seems perfectly OK to my ageing ears, a mixer app gives you a screen to adjust balance, front back and gain for various frequencies, loudness etc.
My steering wheel buttons work, in that the volume, mode and phone buttons do what they should but there is an app for tuning these buttons which doesn't seem to respond at all.
I hope this has made things a bit more clear rather than more confusing! I am happy to try anything specific if you post exactly what you would like me to test.

Trying not to double up with John's information as i am sure they are similar units, Sound quality is great. It has a graphic equaliser app that you can add custom settings too,as well as the Classic, Rock etc etc. One problem I am noticing is when I am listening to the DAB+ radio stations and open another screen (say the navigation), the sound starts clipping. Ok when the DAP+ screen is showing but not happy when i go to another screen. The main radio app is fine though, can move to another screen and the sound will integrate with the navigation voice. Bluetooth connections fine, not showing txt messages or reading it out like the factory unit. Maybe an app can fix this but not a problem. Still getting my head around all the configuration possibilities.
The CANBUS menu has other vehicles which you can choose from, one being Prado. I change this over and lost the steering wheel integration, so changed it back. Will have a play when I get more time. See the photo for the factory menu. Password for this is 126
The maps are Australia_TomTom_2017.06_170712.fbl (do a google search for info).
There is a "Control " menu which I had a play around with and got me panicking. I turned off the setting "Entry and Start System" while testing the unit before I put it in the dash. I forgot I done this, put it all in the dash and had some lunch. Came back to the vehicle and It would not start. No green light at the push button.Sinking stomach feeling, so back to basics, no fuses blown, took the unit back out and checked for shorted wires. Onto google and found that if I put the key fob next to the push button I got the green light to go. Bugger, then I eventually went back to the "Control" menu and turned the "Entry and start system" back on, no problem with the starting. There are a number of other settings in there, one being "Daytime running lights" which has been a long running series of posts here on the forum. Will check these out later in the week and let you know.

Re the sound problem have you tried changing the menu in android settings, navigation settings? there you can change if navigation sound is mixed with radio and if so what % etc. There are three options but I cant remember what they all are. There is also an option somewhere for audio to be muted when in reverse although I don't think that would be anything to do with your issue.
It does seem like your unit uses Joying firmware as the password is the same. Interesting to read about the control menu, I haven't dared fiddle with that!

Thanks for the links paddyb I do read the xda forum but hadn't seen the first link which is 2208 pages long so may take quite a while to read it all.
Today I took my new unit out again to add the extra two USBs which I hadn't bothered to plug in before. While it was out I stuck the factory unit back in to check what the "navigation" section of Techstream did. I suppose I should have known the answer (not much) but ever optimistic I wondered if it would give me root access or anything useful. All it does is announce if there is or has been an antenna or SD card malfunction so a bit of a waste of time.

Quick update on the DAB+ clipping audio problem. Found the answer here:
                        https://forum.xda-developers.com/and...n-com-t3609608
                        and software here:
                        https://forum.xda-developers.com/sho...&postcount=473

Basically, uninstall the original app and install this modded app. All good, can move to Navigation while listening to the DAB+ and no clipping of the audio. Still looking for info on the "Daytime running lights" setting. Cannot change state of switch at the moment.

Thanks for the info, will remember it when I eventually get a DAB+ add on.
Has anyone bothered to get spoken street names working? I have been playing around again with my unit and after a bit of a struggle have got TTS and also speed camera and school zones etc announced.
Curious to know if any similar units to mine have languages in audio folder that are only in Russian and Lithuanian, no English. I guess this is because the head units are mainly sold to these areas and so the Chinese must program the iGO app accordingly.

Any tips for removing the aircon vents to install into the new unit?

My replacement CANBUS adapter arrived today. As did my apple car play adapter. Great to have the factory multi view cameras as well.
