  • Maddening Rattle around Front left passenger seat

I posted a year or two ago about a rattle/tapping in the front passenger side of my 2014 facelift GXL. I've had it in to several Toyota dealers both in Sydney and in Canberra where I live now. Obviously they've never found it and most of the time can never hear it. The most recent visit they said it was springs in the seat so apparently replaced the seat backing. Not a fix for my problem though. I've got it booked into NRMA next week, and when they can't find it there's a Diesel mechanic nearby that is booked out for awhile.

It's sounds similar to a glass pane/metal piece moving and tapping.

It is not the seat belt hitting the plastic or the middle seats and all internals ie the tool kit, Jack etc are sitting firm. It also is not the center console or the plastic around the gear shift (that has been fixed by rubber padding).

My tapping sounded like it was a little forward of the passenger and turned out to be coming from the wheel well. There's a small plastic guard that came loose and was flapping around.

Sounds like my noise but mine is further back towards the rear on the left had side. Happens at low speed turning left on a rise (ie lick a drive way) or over certain ruts at low speed. Driving me nuts.

Take it to Pedders and have it put on the shaker. It will likely reproduce and allow you to narrow it down to a location/item.

Yours is probably the rear door latch. Just need to flip it over and also lift the locator a mm or so.

If it only happens when you have no passenger it could be the passenger seat belt buckle not returning to correct position.
I had a noise which was traced to this after several mechanics were unable to locate.

In any event I stuck some padding on the buckle as a further safeguard.

Thanks guys, it's not the rear door latch..I have that as well and fixed it a few times already. Same with the seatbelt sitting too high, that was identified early. This noise very different to both.

The pedders idea is brilliant, so if NRMA don't find it then Pedders is next stop... I'll also check the wheel well in the morning just in case.

Hey Rick, how did you go with identifying your noise ? I have similar, and have checked all the above suggestions, but it still occurs.
                      cheers

Here's a left field answer loose exhaust gasket where the first flange joint is. Mine had a rattle when hot that sounded like a water pump bearing. It was there at idle, but not under load and of course it never did it at the mechanics. A few weeks ago I driving home from work it was rattling like no tomorrow so I headed straight to my mechanic who listened then got under it poked the exhaust with a broom handle and the rattle went. $110 later it was fixed.
