  • Long travel set up with only 2 inches of lift options??

    We just sold our 100 and recently bought a GX prado. On the 100 i had 3inch long travel coil with 4 inch shocks worked very well off road, kept up with the big boys.
    Anyone know if i can do this with the prado but a 2 inch long travel setup? I dont want to go to crazy.
    Does anyone do a long travel strut for the front and 2 inch flexy coil for rear that i can put a 3 or 4 inch shock with?
    Anyone done this to a prado yet.
    Cheers

    Guessing you havent had a reply as the info you are after exists all through Pradoppoint in the 150 and 120 suspension subforums.

    The 150 is suspension-the-same as the poat 2010 FJ, so info on FJCC and fjcruiserforums.

        Probably rear dobinsons coils (look for long free length and low spring rate) with 80 series shocks.
        Front is a bit limiting in terms of travel but you can fit for example Bilstein BE5-D563 which has reached the limit of travel without changing the UCA.

        Refer to the suspension database

          Hey Buck,

          How long is long travel!?

          Prados have been heavily modified in suspension travel terms for well over a decade on the 120 platform. In the US there are plenty of 120/150 platforms (4-Runner, GX470, FJ Cruiser etc.) that run heavily modified 10"/12" travel setups utilising after market 2" and 3.5" longer lower front arms, running out past 700mm open length on the rear on modified trailing arms and replacement diffs. We of course can't go as hog wild here in Australia, but hopefully this gives you an idea of the untapped suspension travel that exists in your 150.

          Please see underneath the rear coil section of the Suspension Database for a lot of links to Prado geometry and coil and valving options;

          http://www.pradopoint.com.au/showthr...nsion-Database

          The IFS on the front is limited to around 575mm open length as this is typically where most upper arm balljoints will bind up.

          In the rear you are constrained by the coil bucket separation;

          http://www.pradopoint.com.au/showthr...ado-120-series

          For a 4" shock, which would be going from oem open length of 570mm out to 670mm, you'll need a coil bucket separation of 460-470mm to keep the coils trapped in parallel droop. You won't find a linear, dual rate or progressive coil in this free height range that will keep the lift at 2". A 460-470mm linear coil will be around 230lb/in at the Prado rear coil inner diameter, and this will lift a minimum 3" on an empty GXL, even more on an empty GX.

          I run a 670mm open length shock with a 460mm 225lb/in coil, and my bottom rim to guard is 840mm (around 2.5" lift on the 120), but my rear is built in with a constant load of 100kg.

          Other hassles you will also discover; i) due to the ratio of front/rear pitch frequencies you'll run out of load carrying capacity on a softer rear coil and you'll suffer pitching motion when packed up, something the Prado is highly susceptible to with poorly valved rear shocks and/or lightly coiled rear, and ii) most after market long travel rear shocks are either woefully under valved on rebound, or heavily over valved on compression.

          The Prado is a very capable vehicle on a 2" lift with a decent touring type setup with lengths of 570mm/620mm.

          Hope this gives you a decent starting point!
