  • Locking brakes during wet weather and skidding in small turn

    Hi Guys,

I am having a 2010 Prado GRJ150R VX Sports Automatic for almost 4 years.

Last two years we were noticing skidding issues even in small turns and roundabouts. When I mentioned this to our dealers and mechanics they were saying the Anti Skid System getting kicked off for stabilizing the car.

We are really pissed off because our 2009 corrolla will turn without any issues in the same turns and roundabout even in faster speed.

Yesterday we were going in a downhill very slow (20kmh) and about to stop in a signal. We applied full brake to avoid collision with the car in front but brakes locked and I don't know whether ABS or anti skid system kicked in, the car was skidding, shaking, sliding and ended up rear end to the other car. (Didn't apply hand brake due to the panic situation). I felt brake pedal was vibrating.

we recently replaced brake pads.. Tyres are in good condition..(according to the mechanic 20KM life remaining on these tyres). (please note we have 20 inch sporty wheels and low profile tyres for our car)

After the incident I checked the brakes in different speeds and it was working fine.

As we already planned a Sydney to gold coast trip during Christmas holidays we are worried with this issue. (Planning to go through scenic views which will have lot of ups and down roads). We lost the confidence in our brakes now.

When I googled people are complaining about 2010 Prado with similar issues but couldn't find any solution from anywhere.

Some are saying it is due to the disc issues, anti skid system failure, ABS system failure etc.

If anyone experienced and fixed the similar issues please advise me what is the issue and what to fix.

Please let me know if you need more details.

    Thanks in advance

If it’s skidding during turns and under braking I’d be looking at the tyres. Just because they “appear” to have plenty of life remaining doesn’t tell the whole story. Tyres will deteriorate and lose performance as they age, they do have a shelf life even if there is plenty of rubber left. Also you don’t mention which brand or model of tyre you have. Maybe they’re just crap tyres (not being judgemental here). That’s were I’d be looking. Cheers

Hi Faulco, Thanks for your reply.

Tyre brand is HANKOOK VENTUS ST RH06 265/50R20. When we bought this car in 2013 we got brand new four of these ones. we have done only max 30Kms.

During the vehicle inspection in 2013, they mentioned "Brake disc rotors have minor wear lips, but are still serviceable.". May be something related to this?

      Hope this will help.
      Cheers.

Hi lalsyd, the reason I suspected that the tyres may be the issue is because you mention a loss of traction also occurring during turns which is unrelated to braking. I would rate HANKOOK as a quality tyre maker. My only other suggest is to check the tyres manufacture date, it’ll be stamped on the side wall, just to check you haven’t been sold old stock. Good luck sorting it out. Cheers

But the turning issue was there from the beginning..even with new tyres..whenever I told this to mechanics and dealers they are saying it is the system to stabilize the car. But it is happening only on wet roads.

when I tried brake ysdy it was shuddering.

Thanks for your help taking to mechanic tomorrow and check the tyres as well..now I feel front tyres have less grip now..may be needed to change.

Thinking that the word "Sports" works with a 4wd may be part of the problem.

              Hi All,

I took to mechanic ysdy and mechanic couldn't find any major issue. He took the car with me for a detailed drive and did lot of turns in roundabouts and cul-de-sac areas and sudden brakes which never created any issues. He mentioned things will change when it is wet road.

              These are his findings.

              1. Tyres are relatively good at back and front got little less life like minimum 3000 kms left and back tyres will go min 5000 kms (Still thinking for a brand new tyres since we are planning a 3000 kms drive to sunshine coast from sydney.) He mentioned little bit issue with wheel alignment. (Taking to my tyre friend in this weekend and do the wheel alignment.)

              2. Brake pads in-front was almost finished less than 20%. Back brake pads are new. recently changed. so 90% remaining. So replaced both front pads.

              3. Since I mentioned vibration on brakes and steering he checked the disc rotors and said we can service the rotors by machine and will give 2 years.
But only $170 extra he told he can put brand new ones. So put two brand new disc rotors (DBA - $470. I know it is little too much but servicing for the existing one cost $300..so for a better piece of mind I went with brand new). According to him this will solve the vibration issues during the brakes.

              4. Service was overdue and less engine oil remaining. so he did the full service with synthetic engine oil. (I am doing only once in an year servicing now)

After fixing they took for a test drive in rain and said all good. But when I started driving I tried to simulate the same accident scenario by putting brake in down hill wet road and wet round-abouts and I feel still not stable. ABS is kicked in and stopped the car. But still not 100 percentage sure it is fixed.

May be changing the tyres may fix the issue then no need to worry about it around 50K Kms. Please advise the best Tyre for my situation..Tyre specification is 265/50R20.

some offer is going on bridgestone tyres..my preference for road use only. prefer long drives. need better grip and stability. This is only for family use at the moment.

I will update in this thread if I feel issues again and experiences after new tyres.

Thanks all who helped with some suggestions.

Pedal vibrating = ABS working. Tyres with 3000kms left means they are 95% worn - most people get around 60K out of tyres. No, a Prado will never handle like a Corolla, so don't try and drive it like one. Road surfaces always provide varying levels of traction - wet roads, especially if it hasn't rained for a while, have less traction. Trees, leaves, oil and other stuff all add to the variability, so its hard to replicate an exact traction scenario. The tyres used on the 20in Ford Everest would probably be a good option - OEM tyres tend to be easier to find. I personally would never run 20 inch wheels - not enough sidewall for protection and hard to find 20in tyres if you get a puncture. I don't even like my 18s, and run 17s for offroad.

Ultimately, you ran into the back of someone due to not driving to the conditions, having 95% worn tyres and thus not leaving enough space. Maybe look at doing an advanced driving course, where you can practice emergency braking in a controlled environment (usually in your own car). It might also help to get some confidence back in the car.

Agreed Bob, plus the 80% worn front brake pads and the one a year service. I think you need to spend more time on maintenance, the prado is a heavy car that will wear ALL components much faster than a small car...
                  Cheers

Thanks guys for all your suggestions.

I admit I am not a good driver. This is my first SUV and driving for last 4 years and never had any accidents. I have done around 40K Kms. Bought Prado for the style, 7 seaters and height which can use for accessing third row via boot for an adult. It was really handly when my in-laws were in town. (Please note that I have two baby seats in second row so can't access third row by moving the third seat). I am not planning any off-road driving.

Since you are advised 95% is done I am planning to change my tyres. As far as my family safety is concerned I am changing all four tyres.

Since the previous owner put 20 inch low profile sporty wheel it is hard to get good deals for this wheels.
(Offers I am getting are between Bridgestone $435 each and Kumho - 385 plus wheel alignment)

When I spoke to my local bob dealer they are offering a almost brand new prado toyota genuine 4 wheels (max 10km it seems) and Bridgestone tyres for $1200. He offered a trade-in for my wheels as well (Didn't say how much). How much I can ask for my sport wheels. (my car & wheel photo is there in my profile). I really feel the genuine toyota wheels will give more stability and better offers when replacing tyres.

Please advise guys. Thanks in Advance..
