My 1KZ 120 has developed a tapping noise metal to metal, when it reaches operating temperature, and above 60kph. Thought it may be injectors, but that has been discounted. valve clearance is fine.

Thank you so much Razorback81 for your reply. My mechanic has had the car for 3 days now, and no, he has not mentioned checking the glow plugs. It is a strange one as the motor has to reach operating temperature before it is noticeable , then at 60kms you would not hear it until you gently increase speed, then 'Little tommy tapper' starts. It is a very even beat, very much a metal to metal sound. Thanks, will get him to check.Comment

I had a similar issue on a KIA sportage, sounded very much like tappet noise, tried everything and couldn't get rid of it, ie oil flush, engine cleaner etc, finally ended up buying four hydraulic lifters, cam belt idler, water pump, new fan belts, and gasket etc having excepted that I would need to pull of the camshafts to replace at least one lifter, so may as well do the belt and water pump while i'm at it.
Took off the fan shroud, and removed the fan blades and went to remove the aircon belt and then noticed the aircon belt had partly delaminated, when the belt was going around it was slapping a aircon tube! Why it only did when it was warmed up have no idea. In the KIA it is hard to see the aircon belt or power steering belt with the shroud and fan in place.

I have to thank you again LeighW, when I go back and read through your reply, our complaints are very similar. my mechanic worked on it for 3 1/2 days and a change over motor was his only remedy as the complaint could not be diagnosed. The 2 alt. belts had a chunk out of them so I am all set to attack tomorrow and take on board your findings. Its a lovely car but to long in the tooth to put another 10 G into it.
