  • Have $25k, 120 or 150

    Hi Guys

Looking for my 1st Prado which will be mainly on road but already have trips planned - Simpson in July. I plan to have this vehicle for 2-3 years, learn what I can and then upgrade. Been trying to do research for a while and think I will get a Petrol to try and keep the initial price down, servicing costs down, although fuel costs will be up and from what I have read, reliability will also be up. As mentioned it will be a daily driver so safety is very important - 7 airbags etc, so looking at a VX/Grande 120 (GXL with option pack seems extremely rare) or a GXL 150 (Although have seen a couple of 150 Kakadu's for late 20's/30k. No towing planned atm.

What are the pro's and con's of both? What would you buy?

Both great. Go for whichever has the lowest km, best service history and best condition. If the 120 then VX / grande worth finding for the traction control etc. Be aware that the Grande and kakadu have the air bag rear suspension which may be due for replacement before a desert trip. Lots of threads/ info. on here.

I went through this same exercise last year, and ended up with a 120 GX D4D auto with Option Pack 2. Has traction control and all the airbags. There are some out there, but they're often not listed on the ads. I spent a lot of time looking at photos in the ads trying to see if the transfer lever said H-N-L or H-HL-N-LL. If it's the first, it's got traction control, and likely all the airbags as well. If you're getting a Petrol you should have a pretty good choice for that money.

Thanks for that tip Ziggle, will keep in mind

I prefer the 120. Larger fuel tank, removable rear seats giving more space in the rear... and it looks better

Yep - 120 wins for the following reasons:

            1. Larger Fuel Tank - 180 vs 150 litres,
            2. Removable third row seats, giving more luggage space.
            3. Car will drink 91 octane fuel, not just 95 (as the 150 does)
            4. Electrics are out of the way of water, (mostly), so the car won't short out when doing deep creek crossings (I'm talking Nolan's Brook - 120cm depth)
            5. Weighs less - so has greater load capacity before reaching max GVM.

            Enjoy!

The 150 is E10 compatible... it takes all unleaded fuel types (except E85 of course)

The 120 is also E10 compatible.
The 150 is "recommended" to run on 95, and yes will run on 91, but at somewhat reduced power. The 120 will run on 91 quite OK.

Thanks Steven, was laying towards 150 due to later tech e.g. traction control, ebd, but will now re-evaluate. The 3rd row seats will come out permanently which ever way I go.

The other way to tell a 120s GX with an option pack is that on the dash it will have climate control air rather than rotary dials
New 2015 150s GX 5 seater with floor mats, towbar and a big wish list
Previously a 2004 120s 1KZ GX silver manual with stuff
before that a 1996 RV6 90S with lots of gear

Sorry, only just saw this question. If it's a 120 GX auto, then yes, definitely. The only way you could get traction control on a GX was by getting Option Pack 2, which also included the side airbags, climate control and cruise control. Not 100% sure about other spec levels, but I think it's prob the same with them. I'm not aware of any spec level or option that gave traction control but no airbags. If you come across a specific model that has H-N-L and you want to check, take a look in Redbook.com.au. If you hover over the option variations it'll tell you what's included in each option.

AFAIK there are no 120 manuals with traction control, but I believe some have the side airbags.
