I've been driving manual shifts with tachs for 50 years and now have a 96 Prado TX automatic with a tach. Never had a tach on an auto transmission before. I start up the Prado, the tach goes up to 2,000 rpm and stays there with very slight movement as I am accelerating or slowing down. Seems kind of useless to me unless it's purpose is just to tell me my idling speed. Am I missing something?

The tacho shows engine RPM, in auto lightly loaded it will tend to hover around the most efficient RPM, when you put the pedal to the metal it will be different but yes as the auto handles the RPM it will never be excessive. When you manually select a gear though it is a different thing, then the tacho is handy it is if your trying to keep the engine within its most efficient power band.
Don't know about the 90 series but some of the earlier auto transmissions in other makes don't protect the engine from over revving when you manually select a gear. My 120 Prado has maximum engine rev table in the owners manual for when manually changing up and down but I would have thought it would have a safety override being a late model transmission but have never revved it that hard to find out?HKB Electronics, manufacturer of the Alternator Voltage Booster, Silver 2008 D4D,Lifted,Underbody protection, Alternator Voltage Booster, Tiger Z winch, Lightforce DL, Air Horns, Tanami Drawers, Drop down fridge slide, Outback cargo barriers, Rotronics dual Battery system, Polaris GPS, HF/UHF/VHF, Radio speaker combiner, Long ranger water tank, Diff breathers, Inverter, Snorkel and others

I presume it does actually show idle speed etc, and what you're talking about is when you're driving?
The torque converter stalls around 2300 so that's where the engine will try to work as the car's pulling away.
Once she's on top of the load, the old KZ makes max torque around 1900 so you'll tend to stay in that range, 1900 to 2200.
