  • 2018 Prado GXL OEM Towbar Question

    Hi Guys

We're looking at buying a new Prado in the next month or so and would like to get the OEM Tow Bar fitted pre-delivery.

Just wanted to know if this setup has a removable tongue that allows a Hayman Reese Recovery Point Tongue to be installed in its place.

Bit new to all this, so please excuse any ignorance in this regard, however as I understand it, if the alternative tongue will fit; then you can do a recovery from this; as obviously recovering off a tow ball is one of the most dangerous things you could do.

    Any advice would be appreciated.

    Cheers

    Luke

    Yes, it's a removable 50mm square hitch.

      Awesome, thanks amts

Just wondering if there's any recommendation on the type of product that would be worth buying?

Also, do these OEM setups have any compatibility issues with Aftermarket Products?

      Cheers

      Luke

try the roadsafe alloy hitch. I picked one up for $49. heaps lighter than the steel ones and still rated for 5t.

You can also just remove the tow ball tongue and use the hitch pin for recoveries.

Something to consider; the Hayman Reese bar looks much nicer on as it doesn't require the bumper to be cut.

You might also want to consider whether you may need to extend interlock tow ball mount. You could have OE warranty issues or insurance issues if something goes wrong.

I have a OE Toyota tow bar fitted to my 120 Prado. I enquired to get a longer hitch or interlock tow ball mount as I can’t open the Prado rear door properly with the camper trailer on and needed to set the trailer back a little. Hayman Reece didn’t want me to extend the hitch and wouldn’t sell me one as this would void the warranty and they had concerns as potentially the extended hitch would be made from a different metal to the OE tow bar and might fail. They recommended I stick with accessories sold by Toyota. Problem is, Toyota do not sell an extended hitch or interlock tow ball mount.

Next time around, I will definitely only be fitting Hayman Reece.
