  • Front towbar

Has anyone had any experience with purchasing/mounting/using a front mounted towbar to a 120 series Prado, stock, no bullbar? Thinking of fitting one to manoeuvre caravan into angled parking spot beside narrow driveway.

    Many thanks,

    David

    Hi David
Have you entertained the possible purchase of one of the powered caravan shifters or alternatively the ratchet style jockey wheel. http://www.klika.com.au/al-ko-10in-trailer-caravan-
Would think mounting a forward tow point without bar will pose some challenges.
Can you reverse the van with the towbar for the majority of the manouver then utilise say the ratchet style jockey wheel for final positioning?
    Cheers

x2 - I use a ratchet style jockey wheel to move my van into tight spots. Works a treat but I would suggest you look at the single wheel version not the twin wheel. When the ground is cambered I find the twin wheel on a solid axle has all the weight on one wheel and it tried to pivot on that point.

Thank you for the suggestions. Our driveway is sloping so I thought the front towbar might offer obviously more power and less chance of the van taking off out of control. I can get the van most of the way to its resting spot on the current towbar, but final 6 or so metres (ie a little more than its own 14 foot length) is a bit tricky. Are those ratchet jockey wheels okay with an incline? The motorized ones I've looked at don't seem to do slopes.

I found these which look fine (about $AUD500), just hoping to get the cost down:

They don't do inclines very well and are limited by their grip on the ground more than anything else.

Mine is a slight uphill push but the brake/gear mechanism only stops you going in the reverse direction of travel.
If you're 'Pushing' downhill you're going to have a bad day...

See if you can find a fellow vanner that has one for a trial run before you commit either way.
          Cheers

How heavy is the towball weight?

It is a relatively small van - 14ft Avan, single axle. Naughty I know - I should have checked it but I don't know the tow ball weight yet. ATM is 1,550 and TARE is 1,250. The rear of the Prado does not seem troubled when the van is hooked up although this could be deceiving as it is the Grande with self-levelling airbag suspension. Think I’m going to use a 240 volt winch, hook it between the van and a solid steel post concreted in especially for the task.

The winch will just do the last 6 or so metres dragging the van into its parking spot which is at a right angle to our single lane wide driveway. Will lock the van to the post for added security while being stored.
