  • 2.8 D4D 6 speed auto transmission temperature on scangauge

I have just upgraded from 2014 3.0L 5 speed auto to 2018 2.8 D4D 6 speed auto. Nice and quiet to drive compared to the 3.0L 5 spd.
First run up into the hills today and the Scangauge showed Transmission Oil temperatures that were much higher than the old vehicle.

Around town 5 speed showed 78 degrees Oil pan and TC. Went up when the torque converter unlocked but after the torque converter locked again the temp came back down after a few Kms. Even when towing, ATF temp might go to 100 through the hills but would be back to 78 after less than 5 minutes once going down hill.

Driving the new one through the Adelaide hills today both temperatures went up to around 100 and stayed there (plus or minus 5 degrees) even on long downhill runs. After a 10k run downhill and about 10K of city driving to get home the temps were still in the 90s. Even letting it idle at home for 5 minutes the temperatures did not drop.

Would anyone with a 2.8 D4D 6 speed auto and a Scangauge post the temperatures that they see doing the same sort of thing and also when towing as that is what the vehicle is primarily for. I tow 2.4T caravan but have not got the brake controller on this vehicle yet.

The old vehicle has towed the caravan 30,000+km and I never had a problem with the scangauge readings. It is a concern when this vehicle is rated to tow 3 tonnes but with even no load, ATF temperatures like above make it look like an extra oil cooler is needed.

    Cheers
    Steve

Apparently the new 3T model has 'extra transmission cooling' engineered in. I couldn't see a trans cooler in my quick look through at a dealership.

I'd definately put a trans cooler on it. In-line picking it up from the radiator output line through the cooler and back to the transmission.

I don't have a scangauge and my old techstream cable wont pick-up the driveline ECU on the 1GD so I don't know what temps i'm doing but they must be better than without the additional cooler.

p.s Idling wont cool your trans fluid as you're missing out on the airflow through the radiator to cool the fluid. If anything it will increase temps..

      Hi Steve,

Interesting observation between the older 3.0 and the newer MY2018 2.8 trans temperatures. I drive an '09 200 Series, and my observations via ScanGauge is that the automatic transmission fluid temperature behaviour of your older 3.0 is practically identical to the 200 Series. I watch my TFT temps like a hawk when driving.

What's interesting is that the 200 Series does have an external oil cooler from the factory as standard, but the old 3.0 diesel in the Prado did not (only the V6 did, apparently).

So I'm following your thread with interest, because I'm led to believe that the MY18 with the facelifted front does also have an oil cooler from the factory, presumably to cater for the increased 3000 kg tow capacity. So why is it that the fluid temperatures seem to be running at a high temperature despite the addition of the oil cooler?

Do you have an aftermarket bullbar or other things like large spotlights which might have affected the airflow through the radiator area of your vehicle?

Meanwhile I would be keen to hear the inputs from other MY18 owners with Scangauges. As we all know, higher trans temperatures is certainly not a good thing, but perhaps the "thermostat" on the MY18 is designed with a narrower temperature range. On the 200 Series, the fluid temperature swings are quite drastic depending on torque converter lockup state.

My previous 2014 Prado had a larger Oil cooler in front of the radiator with a fan in front of that independent of the viscous fan behind the radiator. This one also has an oil cooler the width of the radiator and an electric fan.

          Hi Steve
I have the SR Hilux 2016.
The scan gauge temps on that go up to 116 and 108 in 6th empty.
Towing in (5) 75 -80 uphill and down dale.
Empty I travel a lot in 5th for that very reason, in 6th it runs high temp and chops and changes all over the place.
A truck coming towards you, as you pass it drops back to 4th then back up to 5th then 6th.
A little hill, wind or what ever hardly even makes 6th on 110km.
I have complained, but a absolute waste of time.
Very disappointed with the 2.8 and 6 speed auto.
3.0lt Prado 2013 is due for replacement, but after Hilux, I do not know what I may do.
          Cheers
