  • Portable air compressor

Looking to buy a portable air compressor for around the $200 mark. Need it before Xmas so it will need to be one I can get from a shop in Perth.

    Any recommendations?

    Cheers

Don't know if you guys have a 4x4supacenter over there but the Thumper compressors are pretty good value for money- I've had mine for a few months now and am pretty happy with it, not the same quality as an ARB or similar, but it's a quater of the price.

Anything thats not ARB, killed 3 of them.. Common issue with the crank bolt snapping on them it seems.. I now use VIAIR, running faultlessly used every day for 3 years not one issue.

I just bought a new one for a work vehicle, I got this: http://www.viaircorp.com/ig-series/450c-ig/

          My Prado has this: http://www.viaircorp.com/c-models/450c-compressor/

Been in nearly 4 years now, and it runs every day, I pumped 8 tyres continuous on the weekend from 18-38 in the time my mates ARB took do do 4.. LOL..

I use a 24V ARB compressor for my lockers with the Inflator kit for well over 5 plus years. It gets used on average once a month for re-inflating my 315 75 R16 Cooper STTs from 12 psi to road traveling pressure of 40 psi. It's not portable, but an excellent kit!

Anything that the others above have mentioned is "good kit" !

I’ve been looking in to compressor myself and have seen numerous comments about the shitty warranty process with this mob. It may or may not be important to the Op but it sounds like more of a ball ache to return and replace a thumper if it fails.

Fwiw the $99 compressor from bcf looks good enough for my needs, and if I had around $200 I’d probably spend an extra $50 on a bushranger https://bushranger.com.au/product/bl...ir-compressor/ purely for the 5 year warranty and build quality.

Had a problem with my Thumper (or I thought it was a problem). Called them up, they asked me to take a photo of it (which I did). They sent me a new one no questions asked. Turns out the problem I thought it had was a safety protection cut out and there was nothing wrong with it. I kept the original one without sending it back and they never chased me- I got 2 thumpers for the price of one. I didn't actually intend to steal it I should note- I just don't live in Brisbane and they told me it was fine if I wanted to drop off the dead one the next time I was in town. Haven't been down south for over a year and they've never bothered me about it.

Interesting. The comments I've seen have referred to needing to contact them, wait for them to give a return authorisation number, print off a label, package up and post the faulty unit (via freepost), then wait for a replacement in the post. As opposed to simply going back to the branch where the unit was purchased and swap for a new one.

Perhaps they've changed the process, or introduced the process I'm describing, some time after your issue?

Fwiw the thumper max seems to be a decent inflator, fast at doing the business, but no idea what the duty cycle is and the amperage draw is crazy at the (max) stated amount of 90A!

Not sure on the duty cycle- I've pumped up 6 tyres before from mid 20's to mid 40's without a problem. There's no doubt it draws a bunch of power- Gets exceptionally hot as well. There's no doubt it's not as good as the more expensive options, I guess it comes down to how often you're going to use it however.

I've noticed a lot of other manufacturers are selling compressors that are identical to the single cylinder thumper- BCF, Supercheap and even TJM all sell what appears to be the same compressor with different coloured stickers or plastics on it.

Yeah they do look similar although the bcf model appears to have a much higher flow rate, and may well be cheaper too.

Would you recommend the Thumper Max for very occasional use?

op: I found this video quite informative, perhaps you will too if you haven’t seen it already https://youtu.be/toOyJptLshc

I have a thumper just the smaller one and it does 33s and 35s easy on previous 80 and 105 series landcrusiers it does get hot though but From what I’ve read most get pretty hot too?
