  • TJM snorkel sure lets in rain water

I fought in heavy rain driving my family home last night in Brisvegas. It was not unlike a cyclone, checked the rain gauge at home and we copped (drove through) 32mm in 20mins!

This morning (Boxing Day) I pulled the air box open and found 250ml of water and a dripping wet air filter.

Not sure that is a good modus of operation. Top part of the filter was dry, don’t think the water would have made it any further, but if I had to drive longer...

maybe you were unlucky and the rain was almost horizontal?

I would think that when driving at speed, relative to the car, that any rain would be travelling horizontal.

Good thing about a safari snorkel is that you can spin the intake 180 degrees and have it face to the rear of the car.

Fair call but I doubt you would stop in driving rain and a car full of impatient passengers to do this.

Are you going to talk to TJM about this? I would be interested to hear what they say.

I would think this would be inevitable. The snorkel is designed to stop water being drawn into the engine only because its above the source of the water. Heavy rain is like getting a bucket and throwing it at the intake.

Because it's doing this I'd be inclined to drill a 2mm hole in the deepest part of the intake box, or just outside of where the filter sits if possible.... But only because it's pooling in yours. Just remember to block it up with blu-tak or something the few times in a life time when doing deep water crossings. TJM will blame the design of your intake box for sure. I've never had that problem myself and have done lots of highway driving in heavy rain.

I’d say the drain plug that’s factory fitted was sikaflexed up so I either try to replace it as it drains water when it in vacuum or try the small hole trick.

I have a TJM Airtec snorkel as well and so far have not seen the same issue but it hasn't rained that heavily here for some time. Obviously the air box is sealed as there are 2 points the water should escape- the drain plug and/or the dust ejector tube. The decision to seal the air box generally lies with the customer ( in the Safari install instructions it has a section in RED halfway through that says at that point of the install it must be decided if the box will be sealed or not ) as most will leave the factory drain/dust ejector as they don't plan on going that deep or use a snorkel primarily as a clean air intake. As above, I have left both in and carry a bit of blutack for the drain and an alligator clip for the dust ejector if I need to cross deep water.

Symo, what does the TJM snorkel head look like? Can you attached a photo of the base?

It is like the Safari (and knock-offs) that have the weep holes around the base of the head such that heavy rain is collected in the back of the head and runs down the outside of the snorkel shaft?

edit: never mind I googled it and see that no such rain/weep holes exist, I can see why in very heavy rain it got a mouthful.

That’s odd that it doesn’t. My Airtech on the 120 has the weep hole although I’m not sure how well positioned it is

This happened to us on Sunday between Lithgow and Bathurst. Thickest rain I've seen in a while..

Only we had the engine light come on and two other flashing lights to get our attention. Managed to pull in under cover to find the air box full of water, and filter saturated on the underside. There was water up above also. Spent the next hour drying it out and was able to get the engine light off and pushed on (car full of impatient family..).

Then back out in the rain, and same deal 20 mins later. Basically stop start and very nerve racking drive home..

There are drain holes in our box, but it simply couldn't run out quick enough. I don't think I could have hosed water in there any quicker..

Airtec (TJM) same as OP. But take this with a grain of salt.. The rain was pretty crazy and basically horizontal.

Yeah, but can this happen to other snorkels like Safari?
